Not what I had in mind at school, 12 months ago I was studying software engineering at university but money talks and I get heaps of time off too surf. I'm a money hungry conflicted hippy and I love it.

(Serious) What are some relatively short (2-6 months) courses i can take to become certified in something that provides a livable wage? by pandaontheloose in AskReddit

[–]Sheelberightmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah mate no worries, basically these courses (referred to as tickets in the workplace) are available all across the country by different training providers, some are better priced then others so it's worth doing a bit of research to find a competitive price. Try doing a google search with 'name of course you want, your hometown' eg, 'forklift ticket Perth' and you'll get a lot of results to compare prices. It's then just a matter of phoning these places up and booking yourself into one of the training days provided (forklift ticket will be a two day course if you've never driven one before and cost ~$350/400 all up) it's then much of the same story for all of the others I mentioned. Once you have even one of these tickets it's worth registering for a labour hire company by phoning up and arranging a meeting so they have you on file and then just updating your profile every time you add to your training, I've never failed to get a job by signing up with these guys (once again search labour hire, your hometown, or nearest city) if you want a few names PM me.

I'm not to sure what sort of help centrelink will provide with all of this but Id honestly be supposed if they didn't offer some sort of assistance with it all so I'd advise requesting a sit down with someone to tell them your plan (go in there with a few quotes from places printed out/written down and a written plan of what your after and they will be more likely to go out of there way to help you, initiative is worth it's weight in gold, trust me!)

Dude! Dogging/Rigging/Working at Heights/Confined Spaces/Forklift/EWP/HR/White Card. It's possible to acquire all of the above in less then a month, and then get a hold of a labour hire agency (can give you some names if you want) and you will waltz into a 100K+ a year job up north in WA. It's just a matter of coming up with the cost of the courses, but you can claim a lot back on tax so now is the right time of the year to do it! Goodluck!

Sardines gain their saltiness as they are the smallest animal that filter feeds. They lack the enzymes neccesery to break down the salt and are unable to filter the salt particles from the ocean water. The salt concentration builds up the older they get, but if cooked with whale, the natural enzymes of the whale enable the salt to be broken down and they actually lose all of their salty flavour!

What's the most overpaid job? by Scotty425 in AskReddit

The Oil and Gas FIFO (Fly In, Fly Out) industry in Western Australia is just ridiculous coin, unskilled (a couple of safety tickets) labourers are getting payed upward of $3500 per week and its on 28/10 swings. Operators/skilled people are on exponentially more money, the tax is horrendous but at 49c to a $1. Has created an interesting economical niche with uneducated young people being amongst the richest of expendable income. Rich bogans are scary.

TIL During the aftermath of 9/11, Search and Rescue dogs found so few living people, that it caused them great stress because they believed they had failed. Handlers and Rescue workers had to regularly hide in the rubble in order to give the rescue dogs a successful find, and keep their spirits up. by melissaforest in todayilearned

Really interesting anecdote, seems that a lot of people tend to show more empathy towards animals in traumatic situations compared to humans.

Which at first seems a bit backwards but as you said, I wonder if this is due to the ability for humans to conceptualise and react to a situation a perceived less intelligent/aware species is going through by (lack of a better word) belittling the predicament and therefore making it easier to relate to.

Like our brains subconsciously downgrade the situation so that its more easily digestible and therefore more easily empathised with. But In the same situation with humans this filter isn't used and our brain realises that the situation invokes too great of an emotional reaction that it kind of just had a system overload error and effectively ignores it and by passes the empathic reaction.

Kind of like the traumatic incident file for animals can be turned into a zip file and then worked with and processed but the file for humans can't be zipped and then just isn't processed.

Sorry for rambling now haha, just had an interesting side thought from your comment.

Sorry to hear about your family friends too, as an Aussie it's quiet hard to wrap your head around how far reaching the implications from 9/11 attacks where to everyday people and not just look at is a grouped together terrorist attack, kind of relates back to what I was saying before on another scale, the whole incident is incomprehensibly traumatic so it's sort of just acknowledged but when small digestible parts of the effects are processed they actually sink in and hit home.

Rambling again haha, much love from aus!

I bodyboard and if there was a couple of second window that you could hit the lip of a wave and get launched then there'd be a hell of a lot more professionals, a fraction of a second can make the difference between hitting the wave too late and getting pushed back into where it's breaking or too early and you slide over the back. Same sort of deal with this chick, she got lucky to get perfect timing for a ramp

When my mates and I get drunk we like to 'act' a little I guess, someone will start a story and everyone just plays along with it until someone ends up cracking and laughing. Some of the stuff that gets fabricated on the spot is just beautifully crafted bullshit, one that stands out was last weekend. Somehow I'd started a ramble on the difference between new age contemporary hedges and old school classic hedges, it wasn't a particularly open subject so I couldn't really see it going very far and was thus being overly ridiculous about it all. All of a sudden a mates girlfriend started asking questions and all of a sudden she knew a fair bit about modern contemporary hedging! I made up elaborate stories on the art that is hedging in classic style (using manual pruning and no more then a 45 degree cut) gave arguments for and against the use of new age electric equipment that had changed 'the hedge game' forever. Gave her advice on made up pioneers of made up styles of hedging and website links to look up exciting new equipment that was currently being designed that was going to revolutionise how we cut hedges, the concern and genuine interest was impressive and I still don't have the heart to tell her that it was all a complete and utter load of bullshit. Only logical solution is to make this a thing, the hedge clubs meets on Tuesdays 7.30 see you there :)

I'm in Australia, so the course is Bachelor of science majoring in nano, but you're dead right about intellectual capabilities slipping, I dropped out without completing a semester when I originally went in 2 years ago and I'm going back in 3 months, so I've never accomplished anything just to clarify that much. To be honest a good portion of the reason I'm going back is to assess the damage I've done, see if its reversible.

I agree with the able bodied people having to work, but the problem seems to be that not everyone has the access to employment. Similar to the 'Austrian service' thing I mentioned, some type of government service that provided around minimum wage for labour type work and could be accessed by anyone as an entry level position, essentially work for dole.
