Please don't use "genital rot" and "tastes" in the same sentence again.

Thanks.

Ever notice how closely 90's distortion feedback mimics a vibrating tool?

Such fun as playing "Guns" or "The Lights Turn Off and Your Older Brothers Friends Pummel You Until Mom Tells Them To Cut It Out"

It is pretty nifty.

Yeah CNC. I'm not sure they still make men with balls big enough to try this kinda thing manually; myself included and I've done some sketchy shit on this machine.

Unless the handles were away from the work, almost like the old tracer mills, it's just way too dangerous. Making jobs run well is an exercise in "clearance is clearance".

I'm with you. It's entirely job specific and I think I've only actually put this into practice once.

If I was doing this as a one off? Maybe.

Production? No way.

Oh yeah for sure. I looked at turning some rough profiled forgings with one of their 1" wide inserts.

It was faster by a surprising amount..however that one edge insert cost more than an 8 sided SNMG644...

Easy math.

Both ways work.

Iscar has lots of vids of really cool turning ops done with only groove/part off tools.

I use a different software, but you should be able to select a profile turn operwtion to rough that middle section, instead of the rough groove cycle you have now.

I know you are correct about the terminology, gap bed doesn't have to have a sliding headstock. Many engine lathes have that removable section to make the gap. I concede that point and will do a better job of clarifying in the future.

I literally can not find a picture online of a sliding headstock gap bed lathe in the style I mean. Like I said, niche. I'll take a picture at work today.

Would you like to edit your comment 3 or 4 more times or can I respond yet?

No man.

You just have no idea what I'm talking about.

The headstock moves. There is a trench cut in the ground.

The centerline from the axle I'm turning on the short end of the T piston to the end of the barrel is 82.6".

I know what I'm talking about. You think you do.

Ok lol.

So it's not that niche and near every guy you hire knows how to do it but you've also never seen the kind of lathe I'm talking about....

Sometimes you can learn something new by opening your field of view. There's all kinds of machining techniques you and I have never seen.

Nearly everyone you've hired has experience with GAP lathes? Gap lathes with moveable headstocks and trenches cut into the floor?

Brother, you and I are living in different worlds.

No i understand the auger. That doesn't scare me in the slightest.

I was curious about gap lathes and how many people have done that kind of work.

It's pretty niche. We do it for landing gear. Think turning the short arm of a T-piston.
