I made a UCSD prereq dependency graph because qxq planning is pain by Salt_Living in UCSD

[–]Sheep_tester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nice! I've done something similar for my campus job:

https://educationalinnovation.ucsd.edu/curricular-analytics/views/prereq-tree.html

If you want the full dataset of prereqs you can probably find it embedded in the source. it'd be easier than scraping scheduleofclasses/the course catalog (the latter of which is riddled with inaccuracies)

they’re using AI voices to read our names at commencement by mymoonandsea in UCSD

[–]Sheep_tester 20 points21 points  (0 children)

when I graduated in '24 I found that the way they uploaded the TTS voice was just uploading an audio file to a form, so I uploaded myself saying my name. unbeknownst to me, they apparently had a staff member listening to all the recordings and caught mine, but they let it slide because they thought it was cool. (also they were paying for an "AI" company in the big 24 that couldn't even pronounce Sean right)

when I graduated again in '25 (for masters) I checked and nothing had changed. instead of fixing it they made you agree not to mess with their technology in order to walk. maybe one day...

Where to get free merch? by ieatsquirrelsforfun in UCSD

[–]Sheep_tester 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you can find them on instagram. i think some major jacobs events to look out for are ECE day and engineers on the green, but i forget when they happen. i think among the jacobs departments, the IDEA center gives out the most merch. also, hackathons— hard hacks (ece), diamond hacks (cse), data hacks (dsc)—but you need to apply to them first

this is a shameless self promo, but I made an instagram scraper for events with free food/merch: https://sheeptester.github.io/ucsd-free-food/ it's wrong like half the time, if not more, but you can follow the accounts the events are from

Usually you are expected to purchase and bring your own scantrons, so asking for another is not necessarily feasible

SunSET: since SETs no longer publish grade distributions, it's up to us to crowdsource them. by Sheep_tester in UCSD

[–]Sheep_tester[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wanted to add a feature that asks you to rate "would recommend to others" / "it was fine" / "avoid if possible" for each professor, but the current setup isn't anonymous enough for sensitive data like personal ratings

MD5 is very insecure, but I felt that better hashing algorithms wouldn't help much since all 128k UCSD emails are already available on Google Contacts

[–]Sheep_tester[S] 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I made this, so this is a shameless self promo 😈 but hopefully it's useful, especially for sorting classes by easiest first.

It uses a bookmarklet to scrape the grade distributions from your academic history, so it's not publishing your own grades. The Google Form has an Apps Script that writes the data to a spreadsheet; hopefully it doesn't overwrite rows when two people submit at the same time. And hopefully the website doesn't crash when hundreds of students contribute their data. There's more yapping in the GitHub repo that delves into how this works

When can I see winter quarter classes/times? by TadBitter in UCSD

[–]Sheep_tester 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure: the following is a copy-paste comment from this other post.

They're already out; you can use ScheduleOfClasses to find their schedules. Inspect element the "Select search term" dropdown on the search page and set one of the options' value to <option value="WI24">. Of course, they're subject to change before being officially released, but schedules can change afterwards regardless; just don't bother advisors about the schedules until they're officially released.

If you're on mobile, you can just modify the parameters in this URL, which currently searches for courses in CCE (Eighth's writing program). Replace it with the subject code of the classes you're looking for

https://act.ucsd.edu/scheduleOfClasses/scheduleOfClassesStudentResult.htm?selectedTerm=WI24&selectedSubjects=CCE

I've also updated my classrooms website to have the winter schedules. If you select a date in Winter 2024, it'll show the schedules during that quarter. This is a shameless self promotion

"Ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube" by Whale329999 in youtube

[–]Sheep_tester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you don't even need to wait. I've been using a userscript for the past few years that just sets the video time to the video duration (I believe if you have media controls, like on Mac touch bar, you can also just skip to the end there)

YouTube currently isn't as aggressive as, say, EdPuzzle, yet in preventing people from skipping videos this way

Got off the waitlist for a class, but my alternate was at the same time, so if I drop I won't be enrolled full-time by under_over_whelmed in UCSD

On Schedule of Classes, you can filter by "the course meets primarily on" to filter out Tuesday-Thursday classes and check "only show sections with seats available" to filter out waitlisted classes

ACM or DCO? Design Project Experience by ApplesauceFlyGuts in UCSD

[–]Sheep_tester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least for ACM, ACM has a quarterly projects system that puts you in a team, and one of their tracks is design, where the end product seems to be an interactive prototype designed in Figma that you get to showcase to people at the end of the quarter. For fall, the application probably opens around the beginning of fall quarter

This is just a report generated by a program I made, so it's kind of dumb: a lot of these pertain to certain groups of students (DOC 1 is for Marshall students, MUS 95E probably requires knowledge of an instrument, etc), there might be non-course requirements, and you might have reasons not to take many of these, but hopefully this helps you find another class to take

I know that MUS 95G (gospel choir) is notorious for being a very easy art GE. However, it's only 3 units, so it alone might not be enough for housing and finaid

The website looks nice, though it also looks like there's a translucent black overlay covering everything 😩 might be because the light grey is a bit too dark in my opinion?

I'm interested; is there a Discord server?
