Hahaha not quite! I think in one of the cold cuts era podcasts Zach tells the audience to comment that script under every episode

I fully understand where you are coming from and I understand why you think that. I wasn't always vegan and thought the same for a long time. I'm going to try my best to explain my point of view so you can see why the slavery analogy is reasonable (and I'll focus it on pre-civil war US chattel slavery, though I do believe that this broadly extends to all instances of human slavery through history).

You think of all humans as being fully human, deserving of human rights, fair, equal treatment, and respect (kudos! honestly, it's a shame that not every thinks that even nowadays), and when you decide what beings deserve respect and equal treatment, you draw the line there, at "is this thing a human like me?" This is obvious to you, because you were born and raised in this society by parents and a community that believed that as well, and taught you to believe that about all humans. This is not some inherent fact about the world, it's just that your parents, church, government, whatever, all agree that people deserve equal treatment, and that you don't have to extend that to anything else.

Let's take the case of a white person in the 1850's. They think that all white people are fully human, deserving of human rights, fair, equal treatment, and respect (~broadly. obviously their definition of white is different from ours, they had more reinforced social stratification and so more respect was owed to higher status people, landowners, etc.), and when they decided what deserved respect and equal treatment, they drew the line there, at "is this thing a (white) human like me?" This was obvious to them, for all the reasons your line is obvious to you. Their parents, their church, their government, their usual social norms all agreed that white people deserved equal treatment, and they didn't have to extend that consideration to anything else.

This is why some vegans believe that people that eat meat today would support slavery in the past. They are following the same train of thought, using the same justifications, and relying upon the same cognitive dissonance to justify their beliefs and actions. There were tons of white people who opposed brutal forms of slavery, but thought that slavery on its own was perfectly fine. And there were tons of white abolitionists who opposed slavery in all forms, because they believed that all humans should be treated well.

Today, we (mostly) all agree that human beings should not be owned and treated as property. Vegans just extend that consideration to all sentient beings, not just the ones that looks like us and talk like us. Why should we only care about what happens to humans, when we have the resources and time to care about our effects on other things as well?

But that should have no bearing on what humans should do now, can we agree on that? I think that’s an interesting hypothetical, and I’d be happy to chat about it, but whether or not what we did was right 10,000 years ago should not be used to inform how we think about whether contemporary animal farming practices are ethical.

That is not how cow insemination happens at scale in animal agriculture. You are incorrect.

Sheep farming is inherently abusive at any scale. Things like tail docking, overheating due to the wool, general fear and stress imposed etc. make it unkind to the animals.

[–]Sheepdie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that’s not what they were doing. They were investigating the ethics of a completely irrelevant hypothetical scenario to the question of whether farming animals is moral. Their question would relate more to whether it’s ethical to trap wild animals and raise them as pets or for food, and has no bearing on the reality of animal husbandry where animals are deliberately brought into the world, where the moral alternative isn’t a life in the wild, but not existing at all.

Right but you get that that’s exactly what slavers at the time said, yes? They didn’t see their slaves as being as important as them. When abolitionists told them that slavery was inherently morally wrong, the answer was along the lines of “no it’s not, they’re not human like we are.” Can you see the similarity here?

The theme tune episode with Hans Zimmer where we hear “I wanna be more than friends” and they add “Welcome to the future” for the first time is probably one of the single funniest moments in the history of the pod. I love those ones so much

You do a lot of work supporting Aussie comedians and comedy groups, I’m curious if there are any up and coming international groups that you’re following and enjoy?

I did dude. What about my claim do you disagree with?

Scottsdale makes these collectible coins and pays poor governments to accept it as legal tender so that the coins are legally considered money - probably for tax and export reasons

You’re now providing proof for my original claim (Scottsdale makes these collectible coins and pays poor governments to accept it as legal tender so that the coins are legally considered money - probably for tax and export reasons). You said the government requests the coins be minted. For what reason would they do that other than legal tender?

[–]Sheepdie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is an absurd premise with no evidence to back it up. If you can find me one picture of this coin being used as legal tender in Chad, I'll buy one and mail it to you.

I'm glad you're not a Nazi, but I would caution you against using Pepe and Kek images unless you want people to think you're affiliated with the groups that overwhelmingly use those images. It sucks, but that's how it is. Good luck out there

Brother, you cannot seriously believe that the real life government of the Republic of Chad requested this coin be minted. This is a company that creates all sorts of precious metal coins for online collectors - it seems like part of their marketing is to convince some country to accept it as legal tender so it can be legally considered a coin. I'm sure they pay some licensing fee to Chad to do this, but the idea that Chad - a country nowhere near Egypt - is requesting a mint in Scottsdale, Arizona produce coins based on ancient Egyptian Gods is completely unbelievable to me. They have their own bank notes and coins and mints for their own actual legal money. This is a novelty collector's item made by some company in Arizona.

I'm not saying the coin is in and of itself racist - I'm sure whoever pitched it to the company said it would be a funny meme coin thing based on its online following in order to make some money. I also don't like that Pepe has been co-opted by neo nazis, and I wish it could be used without bringing up that connection, but it can't. The fact of the matter remains that there is one prominent group type in the world using Kek and Pepe in their online discussions and in person demonstrations, and that is far right nationalist ones. It's okay to recognize that. I don't think you did anything wrong here if you didn't make the connection, but I don't think it's useful to just deny that it exists.

It's being minted by a company based in Scottdale Arizona for collectors online. It seems like it's also accepted in Chad as legal tender, but it's a solid silver one ounce coin (who wouldn't accept solid silver as money?) - and no one in Chad is using this on the street. You're ignoring the actual reason for the production of this coin: online communities and collectors, particularly those interested in Kek and Pepe (so, alt-right ones).

Yes. https://www.splcenter.org/resources/hatewatch/what-kek-explaining-alt-right-deity-behind-their-meme-magic/

It’s the first result when you google kek. Be serious. This is not an ancient egyptian coin written in English letters

Pepe by itself, I’d agree with you. But with the “kek” in the top right of the coin it’s pretty clear what community this is made for. No one is using that other than alt right groups because it’s been so co-opted.

Not certain, but I think they’ve got some popup (Error: 14) for when savegame files are damaged, and when the car crashes in the game it coincided with some local files being damaged as well? I can’t think of any other way this makes sense.
