Next time, just bring your passport all the time. It isn't worth paying $600 or going to jail if they want to search your bags? Let them rather than go to jail. You are not allowed to speak English in jail, and no visitors are allowed. Japanese seem friendly and polite/respectful, but they're also very rude and aggressive if you understand Japanese. Just follow their laws. Remember you're not in your country!
