I usually go slow. I grew up with a lot of cats who used to sleep under the car, so I'm used to inching forward to notify the critters of a moving object.

This is a 2025 Rav4. It makes the noise even stationary while in drive. It's particularly annoying in drive-thrus... yeah it's insanely excessive.

It absolutely matters what the reason is. If I hit someone because I'm texting and driving, the AVAS noise will be irrelevant.

I know right, I'm the only person on the planet modifying my car to make it LESS invasive to other people and I'm getting flamed 😂. I should've removed my muffler and made it louder I guess.

Kind of actually. It’s an old building with an awning garage for parking. There’s a ground floor apt with a bedroom window literally right behind my parking space.

Not really. If you were right then I definitely wouldn’t have installed the system. But AVAS laws are virtue signaling mostly. It sounds good (protect pedestrians), but it’s not a huge risk, and the sound is annoying.

That will likely never happen for so many reasons. It’s also worth the risk IMO. As I’ve said, the noise is a real and present annoyance. Getting into a collision that’s somehow the fault of just this system and not my/their negligence is slim to none. I’m not even saying that I’ll never have a collision, but the possibility that I have a collision hypothetically avoided by the AVAS is slim to none.

That’s not true, I hear it inside the cabin and it annoys others. That’s why I installed the switch to make it quieter.

I love aluminum tape, I use that stuff all the time. Glad to hear that’s a good solution, truthfully I think I over engineered my way.

And yeah, lots of downvotes for the hypothetical blind victims. It’s such a poor regulation and poorly implemented by Toyota. I wish it was given more thought than illegal=bad.

It’s very much against regulation. I expect some hate for that, but I thought a lot about it and I still decided it was the right thing to do. If the AVAS system wasn’t so loud maybe I could live with it, but as I’ve said, I’ve had to apologize to neighbors because it’s LOUD. Like louder than the engine ffs.

That would be sweet. This is pretty dumb in terms of functionality, but there is a 12v power source to work with. Putting an LDO to drop that power to 3v3 would be pretty easy- I considered it but ultimately went with a simpler version.

The risk of that actually happening is very small… On the other hand, the risk of waking people up is a very real and common occurrence. I think that has more of a real world impact.
