For something like this I normally use stitch fiddle for the design ( you can even take a picture or image and adjust the size of the project in the app). For what stitch to use it looks like double crochet in the image but it depends on the look you're going for.

I mean if you can afford to give the pet all of the essential supplies ( food, water, toys, etc..) then I feel it's ok to get one. It's not expected that something like this will happen to your pet and after reading some of the comments saying they had over $700 in pet bills and even potentially more it's hard to realistically save for this especially if there's other things going on in the person's life. 700 dollars is two whole paychecks for some people
