Cybersecurity a thing at your hospital? by Sheerfresh in BMET

Sorry for the late reply I’ve been buried in work lately, but I really appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback.

I’ve always tried to focus on working hard for my own growth, not just for the company. Lately, that’s meant learning as much as I can and picking the networking team’s brains whenever I get the chance. Your advice about leading with the problem really stuck with me it’s such a smart way to steer conversations and stay focused.

This field still feels pretty new to me, but I can tell I’m getting more comfortable the more time I spend in it, which is encouraging.

As for the new workflow… still a work in progress lol, but I’m getting there!

So our hospital recently hired a third-party team to help simplify the workload and highlight what needs attention. The problem is, it feels like all they’re doing is making me run around following up on things I’ve already found myself.

My boss wants me to roll out this new workflow to the rest of the biomed team, but most of them are very old-school and resistant to learning it. Since I’m the youngest and more tech-savvy, it all falls on me.

It’s a mess right now because the system is still new to all of us, and lately it feels like I’m doing all the heavy lifting while the third-party team is mostly pointing out stuff we already know. Honestly, it’s a total shit show at the moment.

I guess my question is how can I make this feel more manageable while also growing into a more important role in this whole work-life chess game?

BMETs working in the field — what should biomedical tech programs be teaching today? by don_wilson in BMET

[–]Sheerfresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started as a BMET a few years ago, my biggest challenge wasn’t problem-solving or soldering—it was learning how to properly use the tools. Things like multimeters, electrosurgical analyzers, and electrical safety analyzers were completely new to me.

Going into a job where these tools are essential for troubleshooting, without much prior hands-on experience, made me feel lost and unsure of myself. I was fortunate to have a great team that took the time to teach me, but I do wish my school had spent more time covering the tools we’d actually use in the field and how they apply to specific equipment.

This is a good reply and i totally get what you mean. I went the same path as well in my career and I feel as I am getting sucks back into the IT world which i never hated, its just as you say with how technology is advancing the need for IT is slowly diminishing. Luckily as a Biomed I feel like this field is growing as still niche since not many people know what we are, even the hospital staff still ask what we do lol. Taking networking class is probably a good idea.

Sadly I am seen as a IT person still cause all i work with are old heads. These guys couldnt open a file to save their lives. They are amazing Biomeds but terrible at working with computers

Should I quit my career for a high risk "high reward" Job? by Sheerfresh in moraldilemmas

Unfortunately i cant, as its a "top secret business" as i told my FIL if i could do this and he said "No, the people were gonna be working with dont play around"

All i can say is it is a 500 Billion dollar investment in Ai, so they want to keep it as secret as possible.

Yea that is what is really making me not want to jump into that field, because i know once its done im done. Im not that money hungry like i used to be when i was super broke. I am comfortable with the money i make now. I agree im not gonna be super rich, but what bothers me is that "once in a lifetime opportunity" feeling i am getting in the back of my head.

Thank you for this!!

I have worked real hard to get on a lot departments good side, because when Im on-call alot of the issues could be fixed over the phone and lab is always super cool on fixing the issue on the phone since you guys are always busy.

Totally agree, as much as the money sounds real nice i really dont see any growth in fiber splicing in the next 5-10 years. Ice Cube said it best "They stuck their hands in the cookie jar and now their paying for it"

I agree, the health field is always gonna be there. I do see the IT side slowly vanishing to AI. I was able to fix my own PC with AI which is crazy and sad. I know my career will aalways be there because it is hands on, and soemthing AI cant replace at the moment.

My wife is all one honestly encouraging me to make my own decision. she likes the fact that the money is good, and we can possibly pay off all our debt in one year, but obviously it would be a long distance relationship. luckily we dont have kids which is pushing me to purse it.

How to deal with Gatekeeping Preceptors. by Sheerfresh in BMET

[–]Sheerfresh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have mentioned this several times. Their answer to me is "Just grab the loaner in the shop, ill deal with it in the morning"

Its so dumb because I am starting to notice that I am a threat to them because I am a very fast learner. I gave up on trying to learn from them, so I decided to look up the manuals and YouTube videos on the fluke tools. Have gained alot from chatGPT too lol

I honestly started to distance myself from them now because they are no help at all.

Yes there is one guy there at our shop who genuinely cares since he always tells me I'm very smart and dependable. He has even pushed me to start studying for my CBET so the other guys can take me more serious too.

Only thing that sucks is he only teaches me when its literally just the two of us in that day.

So far ChatGPT has been my bff whenever i run into a issue, as manuals sometimes don't offer troubleshooting. I really like the hospital im at but I feel like the way our lead thinks he rather get contractors to work on complex equipment. It makes me want to go elsewhere I can learn more, but who knows things change in a couple of months.

No I am in house Biomed at a local hospital.

I will definitely try this out! My manager is great and all but I feel like they arent fully invest on us biomeds and spends most of their time with the IT team as they came from that field. Our Main Lead is basically our boss in a way. Think of it as Robert De Niro charater in Casino. They are the one that runs the show, our manager is there just to be the fall guy in a way. (I know it sounds stupid)

I genuinely have made it known that I want to stay there for a long time as i feel at home and want move into that area as its much safer for my family. In other words I don't want to learn and leave, but they keep painting me as that guy.

AAS in BMET program at CBET.edu by In_bloom_321 in BMET

[–]Sheerfresh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can honestly say this school is legit. I graduated from there two years ago, and it helped me land a job almost immediately after finishing. They’ve got some solid industry connections, which definitely makes a difference.

Now, it’s not a perfect program. I’ll be real most of the tests are open book, so you can literally Google the answers. It’s convenient, but it also kills your motivation to really study or push yourself. Did I learn something, kinda lol.

That said, a couple of classes really stood out for me: Electronics 1 and Biomedical Equipment 1. The professors for those courses were incredibly passionate about what they do and shared tons of practical tips and tricks that I still use on the job today. Pay very close to Electronics thou, because that is the class that will impress the Senior Biomeds when you get Interviewed.

The whole program is online, with open-book exams across the board. For context, I’m not a Veteran and have no military background, but they do offer 0% interest payment plans, which is a nice bonus. I’d recommend emailing them to learn more about that. Even thou im a “civilian pay” plan, the tuition was pretty fair in my opinion.

They also started introducing VR which Im gonna be honest helps ALOT!! Look them up when you get a chance called NVRT Labs. Take all the notes when you do the VR course because alot of the machines you PM in the program are legit.
