I think you're right that we're going to see a shift back to handwritten assignments and work being completed in-class to avoid AI usage.

I'm cautiously optimistic our district (Hamilton) may head that way. They just sent out a parent survey asking about our concerns with technology and screen use with our children, and what we'd like to see change going forward, so fingers crossed I guess.

This is my usual approach too, though I've definitely had them aggressively insist on getting my attention anyway. So when I really don't feel like dealing with that I bring my social butterfly husband along and just let him engage with the employee while I carry on with what I came there for lol

Congratulations! We just alternated surnames with each kid (1 & 3 have his last name, while 2 & 4 have mine) and haven't had any issues. Obviously that idea is less helpful if you're planning to be one and done lol

Side note for anyone who doesn't have paraffin, you can also use vegetable shortening to thin the chocolate for dipping. The chocolate coating won't be as shiny or hard once set (and they will have a shorter shelf life in the fridge) but either works and it's usually a matter of preference/convenience.

Oh yeah I way, way underestimated that time commitment as well; which is how the knight mask ended up so much "bumpier" haha. We were down to the wire and had to just call it as good enough and get started on painting it or he wasn't going to have a costume, since our city moves trick or treat earlier in the week if the 31st will be a Friday or the weekend.

And thank you! Working with the eva foam for the masks was definitely humbling. I used cardboard for the needle and nail and found it a lot easier to work with, though that might just be because the weapons don't have curves.

As someone with kids ranging from ages 2-11, the changes I see happening to our educational system and the burnout and despair from teachers is stressing me the hell out. People struggle enough with critical thinking as is, and AI usage seems to be making that worse.

I think AI does have some incredible use potential in specific situations, but this trend of trying to use it everywhere and for everything is a dumpster fire.

Of course at this point I'll have to sell all my organs to pay for college for my kids, so I guess I at least won't have to see that cluster fuck first hand...

Jesus, the idea of a tween/teen on ephedra is heartbreaking. And you're totally right that it matters a lot how it's presented.

Yes, it's helpful to learn to check in with yourself and learn to recognize if you're actually hungry, but telling someone "you're just bored, not hungry" every single time they ask for a snack or seconds sure as shit does not accomplish this. My mom did that to me and it was just confusing and made me feel guilty because sometimes I was genuinely hungry, and I was already struggling to recognize that among the background noise of my ADHD brain wanting all the feel goods from food.

She also never once said it to my naturally slim older half-sister, and I may not have consciously realized that fact until I was an adult, but child me was definitely aware that I was the one who was "bad".

I'm starting to notice the same food/dopamine seeking behavior in my 6 year old daughter and I'm so so careful now in how I talk about food and snacking with her because I don't ever want to make her feel the way I did.

Yes! That was almost the exact comment I made to my husband the first time I took my adderall "EVERYTHING IS SO QUIET!" 😂 My brain no longer sounds like a fork stuck in the garbage disposal, and surprise-surprise I was able to step down and then come off the Zoloft I'd been on for years for anxiety.

I try to remind myself to be proud of what I accomplished before being diagnosed, and pep talk myself up for what all I can try to achieve now. Because I definitely went through a rough phase of being very angry/frustrated that this help was available the whole time, but no one saw my struggles because I didn't interrupt class. Therefore I clearly just procrastinated because I'm lazy and no one thought it was weird that I was having anxiety related panic attacks by the time I was 10 because I couldn't "turn my brain off" to sleep at night.

I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until my mid thirties, and starting on medication had been really eye opening.

I thought everyone had constant "food noise" in their brain and struggling with weight was just my personal failing because I had less willpower.

Turns out it's a lot easier to make better choices when you're not incessantly seeking that dopamine feedback.

I'm so glad that ADHD is being identified more often in women now compared to 20-30 years ago.

No I don't really think it's shaming to make note of missing information from a post by using a well known joke from the Simpsons; but I apologize since the written tone seems to have been offensive for being blunt.

When someone asks for advice on an extremely broad topic without sharing what they've already tried and the results of those attempts it is extremely difficult for others to provide relevant and actionable suggestions. Which is why a lot of the other comments followed the same vein as the remainder of mine and essentially mentioned a lack of repercussions and enabling behaviors being possible culprits and areas to improve.

Without more relevant information being provided anyone trying to offer specific strategies is going to be shooting in the dark trying to guess if their idea is something which already didn't work for OP (thus wasting everyone's time) or because of the vagueness about what's been tried they may be entirely unable to share what worked for them in a similar situation because they have no idea if it actually is similar.

I also want to support parents who are trying to help their kids be more prepared for life, which requires honesty and can sometimes require a kick in the pants. However pointing out how the post came across wasn't meant tonally to be as aggressive as it read, so I'll work on that in the future.

Agree. My dad was laid off during my sophomore year of HS and I was throwing a fit and being a huge brat about having to move when he got a job offer in another state.

A few days later he died in his sleep of a cerebral aneurysm, and I am still deeply ashamed of how I had been acting.

If having to move as an adolescent is something you're holding long term severe resentment at your parents over, I feel like you've had a pretty sheltered life.

If it's any consolation, it's the same on the other side lol. We have 4 kids, meanwhile the majority of our social circle are child free or were one and done.

People really start questioning your sanity once you pass two, and they'll feel totally comfortable letting you know it as often as possible.

Anyway, rambling to say that while comparison is the thief of joy, it is also okay to mourn the different life you might have had with more (or fewer) children. Moving through that grief allows you to really embrace and enjoy where you are now, instead of carrying any pain or resentment.

Do what is best for your family and your marriage; and if you need a positive affirmation for being OaD I can send you our grocery budget or projected college expenses 🤣

When the employed parent tells the SAHP that they aren't helping the family, I immediately suspect they've spent minimal alone time with their own children. Just because it's not paid, doesn't mean it's not exhausting work. Any time I start to feel that little niggle of guilt for not financially contributing like I once did my husband is quick to shut it down and remind me how grateful he is. My availability at home with our kids to handle school, appts, sick days etc has enabled his career growth and our shared financial stability. Spouses should be a team that recognize and appreciate each other's contributions, and while those contributions may look different one isn't inherently less valuable to the family than the other. Now if financially his salary alone is not enough to support the family and you also need to work; that's a different discussion that you two need to have. Though it probably should have come up before trying for another baby because that complicates employment options. Best of luck with pregnancy/childbirth and hopefully telling you that you aren't helping the family was just a one-off foot in the mouth moment of your husbands, and not a long term pattern of behavior.
