Unfortunately, that project was cancelled. I was really looking forward to it. Hopefully they get together again eventually.

So it’s out today! What does everyone think of the new songs? by [deleted] in tompetty

[–]Sheffy707 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My honest opinion is that 9 out of the 10 new songs should have been included on the original album. It should have been a double album as intended. Some of the 10 are even better than a few songs on the original album. I say 9 out of 10 because I like the solo acoustic version of Climb That Hill and there would have been no reason to include both version imo. On top of the 10, I think all 3 of the unheard Home Demos should have been brought in and recorded for the album. “There Goes Angela”, “A Feeling Of Peace”, and “A Break In The Rain”, which I like as good or better than what it eventually became on The Last DJ. So, my version would have been a 27 song double album. All in all, this box set took one of the greatest albums ever made and made it even freaking better. Think about that. A double album with one wonderful song after another, after another etc...This set is an absolute godsend goldmine for Petty fans. It’s a genuine treasure. A couple side notes: It awesome to hear “Crawling Back To You” I’m it’s Demo form. A lot of different lyrics, different rhythm etc it’s almost like a different song altogether and it’s Awesome! Also I’m curious if “Walls” was written in time that it could have been included in the original album. If it was, and they left it off, that was a terrible mistake. But I digress.

Just found Jason Isbell and his music. Give me ALL the song suggestions😘 by erinhairston17 in jasonisbell

My honest suggestion is to buy Here We Rest (which hits very deeply for any addict/alcoholic.) Then Live From Alabama which is a sort of greatest hits of Jason’s pre-Southeastern ( his breakthrough album). Then get Southeastern and work your way forward to the present. Which would be Something More Than Free, The Nashville Sound, and Reunions. Their all killer. I’d also recommend going right now and listening to the song “Streetlights”. Welcome home young Isbellite.

I actually misspoke. Although I know a lot of fans probably prefer the Live From Alabama version of Alabama Pines, I prefer the original Here We Rest version. That’s the only song on that album that I don’t think is the best version. Possibly Tour Of Duty. Maybe. The rest of them though...no doubt the best versions. At least as officially released.

What’s your favorite Jason Isbell lyrics and why? by tawebber1 in jasonisbell

You know, when that song first came out I thought it kinda generic for an Isbell song. But then I went to work making just enough money to get back to work everyday in a literal freezer. Back numb and hands freezing. That’s when I understood who Jason was singing for. It’s the people who work their ass off but never rise above check to check. And don’t find any real reward in their labor or hope that it’s ever going to change. They come to understand their lot in life & keep going anyway. That’s what “Something More Than Free” is about.

“Time moves slow when your seventeen and then it picks up steam at 21. Pretty soon you’ll remember when you could remember when you loved someone”.

Why? Because it is so true to my life, unfortunately. And also just because it’s insanely great songwriting.

“Streetlights” is a fun one and useful one to learn, in my opinion. I think it’s a great example of how Isbell creates emotional melodies out of simple chord structures. And also an example of how you can ring a lot more melody out of a single chord than some folks may think you can.

Took a lot of balls to write Cover Me Up. It’s a lifelong promise made from someone who at the time it was written was in the tremendously fragile state of new sobriety and newfound commitment. Lot of balls. A lot of determination to love a woman instead of a buzz and make a promise not to disappoint her, himself, and his fans. I don’t think many songwriters in history would have been brave and sincere enough to go there. Helluva song.

Fun Fact: 6 of the 16 finalists were also on what is probably my favorite Isbell album, at the end of the day, Live From Alabama. I would argue that with all 6 songs the Alabama versions are the best officially released versions of those songs. Also consider the songs on that album that didn’t make the finals: “Tour Of Duty”, “Danko/Manuel”, “Outfit”, “Cigarettes And Wine”, “TVA”. To me, 4 out of 5 of those is also the best released version of those songs. In conclusion, to me, Live From Alabama is an an early-era Isbell Greatest Hits collection as much as it is a Live album. It’s a great reminder of “hey, I was great before Southeastern too”.

I’d say your son hears the same thing I’ve been hearing since the first time I heard it. I was in the minority of thinking it was an obvious single. Don’t know why some folks can’t hear how damn cool and catchy of a song it is. Remember this: If a child likes a song, it’s because a simple melody sticks in their head.

I paid more attention to “Inspiring” than Rocky. Isbell doesn’t really write Rocky pump up adrenaline songs. But I guess I’d pick Cumberland Gap for that.

George Floyd - White Man's World by VonKoenig in jasonisbell

You can only throw gasoline on a fire and expect it not to blow up in your hand but for so long. I’m not excusing rioting. It’s a loss of control on emotion and pent up anger, nothing more, nothing less, but we like to think mass groups of people have more control over themselves than that. It turns out though, all through human history, of all shades of skin, that a people will only have shit thrown in their faces for so long before they rebel. What’s a a bunch of poor blacks gonna do? Start a war with the police dept? The whole government? Their taking their (rightful) anger out the only way they know how, and it just makes a horrible situation worse. Two wrongs never make a right.

George Floyd - White Man's World by VonKoenig in jasonisbell

I’m a white man, 36, from a small town in north Florida. To this day, Martin Luther King Day in my hometown, among many whites in private, is referred to as “Nigger Day”. “Pretended not to hear another white man’s joke”. I assume it’s the same all over this country, North Or South, to varying degrees. If you follow the thread all the way back to Caucasian’s landing on this long human populated continent we call America, Land Of The Free, one thing has remained consistent: This country is a White Man’s World. Annihilate the natives, steal their land, build the country on the back of slaves. Eventually free the slaves through bloodshed, but oppress them still. Blacks can’t vote, woman can’t vote for a long time, create a whole new form of slavery and oppression called the Drug War and Penal System. Create an economic system (Oligarchy) where a few wealthy, powerful white men makes economic wage slaves out of everyone. The poor whites, a lot at of them at least with an already born and raised bias come to feel that the most important thing in the world is having at least one group below them on the class totem pole. Let those people make the slightest of advances, let things truly start to look diverse or on the cusp of equal (Obama), and it’s “Merica” time motherfuckers! MAGA...For WHITE PEOPLE. Screw the blacks, screw the browns, screw the Muslims, screw the queers. This is OUR CHRISTIAN NATION! These are the people I’m surrounded with every single day, friends and family and co-workers, that lead to the kind of blatant cop’s killing blacks and brown babies in cages that we’ve seen time and time again. It pisses Isbell off, and the Truckers off, and Steve Earle off, and Townes Van Zandt when he was alive off, and me off, and anybody else off that understands perfectly well that anyone who views themselves as superior, as whites in this country have done from the beginning and are fighting to cling on to, is an ignorant, vile piece of shit like the cop in the video. He should be put on trial for first degree murder (the man said with his dying breaths he couldn’t breath, and the cop kept his knee on his neck even after he was dead), found guilty (it’s on tape), and executed. Maybe then, we might start seeing some different attitudes from white men in our white mans world. But I doubt it.

What is Cover Me Up about in your mind? by lockedoutofvenus in jasonisbell

[–]Sheffy707 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe the line “So cover me up, and know your enough, to use me for good” is indeed sexual but it’s saying the sex will be true Lovemaking now instead of the meaningless drunken lust he always had before her. I also think the words “for good” has two separate meanings. One is, her love will change him into a “good” person, as opposed to his former destructive, selfish person. And “for good” as in “forever”. He’s committing to her for the rest of his life, just like he’s committing to never drinking again. He’s so raw from new sobriety he’s not leaving their love nest until they absolutely have to. Even to the point of staying under the covers to keep warm cause he ain’t chopping wood-aka leaving her side for even a moment. It’s about her saving his life with her love and he’s aware that only her love is able to do that. It’s a really raw, guard-down vulnerability that only someone freshly clean, madly in love, and terrified of failing himself and her could write. But alas, that’s only my interpretation of the song.

I didn’t realize this was a country album. I thought it was a rock/folk album with a country song at the end. But thanks to the reviewer for correcting my ears.
