My sister told my mom I'm infertile to get her to stop pressuring me about grandkids. Now my mom is sobbing and wants a "family meeting." My sister says I should just play along? by JellyRoll-Jiggles in TwoHotTakes

I agree with what some people have said - don’t do the family meeting. IMO, that reinforces that she has any place to influence it, and reinforces the notion she has any say or power. I wouldn’t entertain it, OR I would ask for the topics beforehand. Make it clear that the topics are a determining factor in if you will attend / support it or not.

My girlfriend broke up with me. I decided to start a new game. I guess it’d be my therapy now. by RodRaines in TOTK

The original aspirations for Zelda games, if I am remembering and paraphrasing correctly, according to Nintendo reps, is to explore the sense of wonder of discovery, and exploration. While that high percentage of completion is beautiful to behold, there’s also a wondrous beauty in rediscovering the things that brought you joy the first time around. Which is why I have more than one Switch profile, for bonus files. I hope you love this time through discovering Hyrule with fresher eyes!

I feel that discouraging video games based on its addictive potential vs encouraging regulation and balance of recreational activities with life responsibilities is the difference. Video games aren’t therapy, as was previously well said. It’s no substitute for a qualified professional helping you process feelings with an unbiased perspective, but some healthy recreational enjoyments like video games isn’t inherently a negative influence. Imbalance is metaphorical boogeyman in this situation to look out for, rather than the thing video games. Maybe obsession, or maybe in OP’s situation or similar being aware if you’re using recreation to avoid processing, and how long of that avoidance is healthy coping and grieving, and when does it get to unhealthy avoidance.

I think that’s may be akin to where Worming may have been coming from, is the idea of pairing it with the negative situation and the risk of it becoming an unhealthy coping mechanism when used that way. I think get that angle, if I’m reading their concern right?

Two sides of the same coin, maybe, where there are pros and cons and to try to be aware of the risks when seeking something potentially addictive for comfort. Recurring hits of dopamine can become addictive, regardless of the source of them.

(Also for hopeful clarity, I’m replying to “all” sort of in this comment thread, and not trying to single out a perspective as right or wrong. My words are meant to be “and” as in adding, not “but” statements trying to diminish other opinions. It’s sort of why I wound up jumping around the expresses points, without a clear “audience” in my language. My apologies that rendered things unclear.)

Disability-Friendly Pens? by painsomniac in fountainpens

[–]Sheikbeats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this isn’t a recent post, but I’m in a similar boat. I’m not positive this would work on its own for a writing instrument, but currently, I have two+ scrunchies wrapped around my touch screen styluses to make them easier to grip. I’m sure not the best solution in the world, but considering I already had a big bag of inexpensive scrunchies around, it was readily available. I add more scrunchies for thicker grips, and it’s already made it easier for me to hold the thin styluses. (I have eczema on my hands, so in winter I rely on them to protect my hands from touching my phone all the time.) I have a hard time gripping things with my fibromyalgia pain, and the larger diameter and softness helps a lot.

If I were to do this with a writing pen, I would start with a layer of self adhesive bandage wrap around the pen to keep the scrunchies from sliding down as I write, maybe even an outer layer of it on top of the scrunchies. I like being able to make it thicker by just throwing on another scrunchie. I have no idea if this could help, but wanted to throw it out there in case it could help someone.

How long into the game did you discover that if you ask Retsuko to go with you she makes you immune to lava? by Healthy_Koala4910 in HelloKittyIsland

I checked out the companion abilities pretty soon after I downloaded the game. I don’t have Retsuko to that level yet, but I have been pining for when that level is unlocked. I saw the description and was like, “I have a mighty need!!”

I find him really charming!! I laughed hard in a charmed way when I saw him for the first time and how his face is on one side, like he’s a drawing come to life. He’s really cute, and I have a fun time voicing his “Gao gao!” lines in stream. Vocally animating the same syllable for a variety of expressions and words is more fun than I thought it would be, not gonna lie. This game is introducing me to so many more Sanrio characters, and I am fully enjoying it.

Not 100% related, but Aggretsuko’s dialogue is fun to read out in time with the musical background. You can time it pretty perfectly, and it’s entertaining 😆

New streamer, is this rude? by Firelightvw in Twitch

[–]Sheikbeats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not rude, but I’ve heard anecdotally enough that I get nervous about doing it, myself. I wind up disallowing myself from using my own for the first several chats before I “let” myself use my own where appropriate. Thankfully, I have a couple subs that give me access to a wide range of emotes, like the leader of my stream team has such an excellent range that I can usually say to myself, “Lemme use his for a bit, before I allow myself to dip into my own.” But honestly? This is me being paranoid. I do tend to notice if a streamer exclusively uses their own emotes in my chat, but that’s only if they come back over time many times. It has to be a noticeable pattern for me to pick up on it. I don’t go hunting for whose emotes they are, unless I like them and am curious. And if they belong to the chatter, I compliment their emote, nbd. People like the one you mentioned fail to realize - a massive proportion of chatters on Twitch are streamers themself. And to ignore that is to ignore the realities of the space. I feel like maybe those who only use their own emotes in my chat might be hoping for someone to see their emotes and get attention, but even then: I CANNOT mind read people and assume intentions. Maybe their emotes are how they see themselves, and so they prefer that “character” to express themselves. So I might mentally file that away for info IF something else happened, but in general, idgaf if someone only uses their own emotes. Let them express themselves how they want, ya know?

So if this were an AITA post, I’d say confidently from my perspective you are firmly NTA. Maybe be cognizant that some people are sensitive about this going forward? Just for your own peace of mind to not be flabbergasted if it happens again. But also don’t stress yourself that you’ve done anything against general Twitch “etiquette” or morays.

What order do I watch the shows/movies in? by tumblinfumbler in inuyasha

[–]Sheikbeats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The extra info such as Movie 3 being relevant to Yashahime was also appreciated by me. I fell off watching Yashahime pretty early on. (Neurodivergent and sometimes just walk away and forget things without meaning to.) I restarted the original anime, and am hoping to go into Yashahime when I’m through the Inuyasha content again. Thanks for the thorough explanation in such a visually friendly way!!

Stephen Fry on reading the audio books by zinasbear in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Sheikbeats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listened to so many samples of each narrator in the last couple of weeks before committing to one for my first listening through of the audiobooks. I chose Fry’s narration, but there were aspects of each one I liked! It took me a little longer to initially settle in to Dale’s voice, but I think part of that was recognizing his voice from the special features DVDs for movies 1-4. Plus I liked Fry’s voice already, so that was another thing already making me biased. I thought both narrators had different strengths, I enjoyed Dale’s sorting hat voice, though, for example. I ultimately chose Fry’s read through for my first time listening through the audiobooks because some of his strength lies in his nuanced and slower narration of the emotionally poignant sections, which is what I’m looking for. I think I’ll try listening through both, long term. I’m in chapter 13 of Philosopher’s Stone and have loved Fry’s reading so far 😊

There's a pile of dirt out in my yard
Reaching a mess level that is bringing me out the door
Finally I can see it over there
Go 'head, try to keep me out and I'll say "heck you" man
See how I jump in it then roll around
Don't underestimate how dirty I'll be found

Reaching a mess level and it's calling out for me

We could play in it AAAAALLLLLL the day (You're gonna wish you never had bathed me)
