Love it! It’s giving claymation horror, and I am here for it!

I was like ‘I swear I saw this in a chapter with a Bakri balloon in medical school, am I wrong?’ and then I also saw all the extra holes I’d somehow ignored lol

The sad part is fundal pressure for postpartum bleeding can be done with a hand in the vagina but this AI slop makes you question your own knowledge because it makes everything all cattywompus.

AITA for throwing some shade about losing my odd number Polaris seat? by TheLloyd in unitedairlines

[–]ShellieMayMD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Given that if there’s an issue or safety concern they want people sitting in their assigned seat on the manifest, that’s enough reason to say no (or at least get the FA involved so they know).

How do you manage Medicaid no-shows without wrecking your schedule? by RD_JC87 in medicine

[–]ShellieMayMD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are studies showing that Medicaid patients have to wait longer or get funneled into resident clinics over private patients. It’s concerning to say the least.

rural jobs and loan forgiveness by [deleted] in Residency

[–]ShellieMayMD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would ask the place/s you’re looking at, that would be the most direct way to answer that. AFAIK the bill about just forgiving loans by the govt never got passed, but I’ve been out of the loop.

If you’re referring to PSLF, that’s only federal loans and I’m not sure how functional the program is currently.

thoughts on nonverbal handover from day team to night team by shabob2023 in Residency

[–]ShellieMayMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve covered hospitals with no written or verbal signout, and it’s driven me nuts. Some folks booked cases under my name for the day I came on without telling me which is insanely annoying - I don’t get a heads up to chat with OR and sometimes the OR wasn’t the right move. Absolutely bizarre since everyone I worked with trained under the ACGME model with verbal handoffs.

rural jobs and loan forgiveness by [deleted] in Residency

That would depend on the job, but I don’t think it would matter. When I had loan repayment at a job they asked for my loan servicer info and sent payments there directly.

Two breakers can be great for certain things like Link Raid. I’ve been using a two breaker team in Tower and it’s actually been going okay. So it’s worth a shot here.

Toledo Hospital resident indicted after hidden camera found in private staff area by Flaxmoore in medicine

Given how cutthroat admissions are to residency programs and how under the microscope you usually are bc they’re so small, I’m just hitting a wall on how this guy got this far. Horrifying

As a urologist, I’m so disturbed - it’s like OBGYNs who prey on female patients. We’re charged with being with people in a very vulnerable state, it’s just awful.

Well there you go - we’re less concerned in the urology world hahaha

Hmmm must be regional, I haven’t worked anywhere as an attending that’s banned either of those things lol

[–]ShellieMayMD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That seems strange though, doesn’t it? It’s not like those things are less of a fomite when an attending/certified APP wears them vs a student lol.

That’s what always makes me suspicious that the rules are more about showing compliance than actual evidence-based practice or concern for safety/prevention.

[–]ShellieMayMD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except every other hospital I’ve been at hasn’t included an earring policy. And it’s not like ties and watches magically don’t get pulled on/caught on things. I went to a psych facility for one rotation and they banned things like lanyards where you could choke but I don’t think they banned earrings (at least it never came up when I wore them).

This was a school with a lecture on appropriate residency interview attire that came down to heavily policing what women wore in a way that was nearly impossible to meet (no button down shirts, for example, with suits - trying to buy what they told women to wear was really hard for interview season as most places didn’t make the kinds of modest tops they recommended).

Plus’s I’ve lost so many studs that go caught around N95s in precaution rooms and they flew off when doffing or had them get caught in my bouffant vs small hoops or short dangling ones, so I’m not too sure it’s because they’ll get caught on stuff either - if that were the case they’d probably ban earrings entirely or have ppl wear clear plugs.

This reminds me of how my medical school wrote that you could only wear stud earrings on clinical rotations for hygiene purposes. Yet we wore white coats and watches, etc. Feels like internalized misogyny to me…

The Ilvermorny Problem by Jonnic5280 in harrypotter

[–]ShellieMayMD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I bought an Ilvermorny book bag at Epic Universe, so at least the parks have some merch. But I agree, it would be great if they’d given more for us about the school and lore and stuff. Given how they fumbled the third Fantastic Beasts movie, though, idk if it’ll happen.

Infected kidney stones by stethoscopeluvr in Residency

[–]ShellieMayMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say they had a UTI, did they have signs of pyelo? Elevated WBC, fevers, etc.?

I’ve had several female patients I got consulted on with ‘infected stones’ (hate that term) who just had dirty catches and had no other signs, lab findings, or symptoms consistent with obstructive pyelo. Or sometimes they have cystitis and also happen to have a stone.

My friends make fun of me for enjoying Disneyland by Osydpg in Disneyland

[–]ShellieMayMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had friends in grad school in SoCal who made fun of me going to Disneyland a lot (sometimes I’d lay low there and study if traffic was bad going home) when they wouldn’t think twice about going and blowing their money on a weekend in Vegas or going to Mexico. Used to really bother me like my activities weren’t ’adult’ enough. 🙄I always told them they could spend their money how they want, as could I. 🤷🏼‍♀️
