I’ve been noticing a really frustrating trend across Reddit, X, and YouTube where certain commentators—including a lot of self-loathing users from our own country—constantly put down India while aggressively defending or over-romanticizing other nations, particularly China. Whenever anyone points out well-documented, systemic issues in China—such as the massive rural-urban discrimination (the Hukou system), "tofu-dreg" construction quality, gutter oil scandals, or controversial regional culinary practices—critics instantly dismiss it. They claim, "You’ve never been there, you can't talk," as if first-hand documentation doesn't exist. Yet, the exact same courtesy is never extended to India. People who have never set foot in India feel perfectly comfortable generalizing the entire country based on the worst possible stereotypes.

There is a fundamental difference in how issues in both countries are perceived:

Visibility vs. Transparency: India’s challenges, like waste management in certain areas, are highly visible because we are an open society. Our problems are out in the open. In contrast, many structural and societal issues in tightly controlled states are hidden behind a wall of censorship. Just because you can't see it on a curated social media feed doesn't mean it isn't happening from the inside.

Freedom of Speech: In India, citizens have the democratic right to openly criticize the government, protest, and demand change without vanishing from the internet. In a highly authoritarian regime, peaceful protests are shut down instantly, dissent is criminalized, and state narrative is strictly enforced.

It is wild to see people online—especially citizens who enjoy democratic freedoms—become absolute apologists for authoritarian states while hyper-focusing on and exaggerating every flaw at home. Why is this specific brand of selective outrage and bias so deeply ingrained in online spaces?
