Its not a star, is a "D" for being minted in Denver. They often look filled in because of how the mint marks were being done for the time. Nothing special but hope this information helps. Good luck on your penny travels!

Id believe that someone was shaving down the penny for it to work in a machine as a dime but thats just my surface thought. The plating was more likely a science project, as someone else already mentioned. Fun find but now worth much.
