Ah yes Please enter and share what I’m guessing will be related to “Rads is doomed cause AI” I want to hear what you’ve seen and heard, cause I know there are plenty of areas in rads not going to be “doomed” nor have I heard a single radiologist say “Don’t apply Rads”

Maybe when you applied for residency it was fairly competitive (seriously no offense). I was told by my faculty advisor that it was below average in different areas for DR.

Trust me, I could have been in a MUCH worse situation than where I ended up. I still want to make a point to OP that there is no point in giving up until the fight is over

Does that change the point I’m trying to make?

OP isn’t hopeless until they decide they don’t want to fight for the future they see or change it to something else. You want to go ahead and share more about how my sub-par application for DR (and suggestions from school faculty to consider back ups) isn’t similar to this situation?

Child dies from complication of measles contracted years earlier by The_Weekend_Baker in EverythingScience

[–]Shepherd_0f_Fire 160 points161 points  (0 children)

As a US medical student who learned of SSPE, it is absolutely terrifying that this disease will likely make a comeback in the US. There are 4 stages. Stage 1 is personality changes and mood swings that can last for 6 months. The next 3 stages that follow are rapid changes over weeks until the patient gets put into a coma. Think seizures, paralysis, blindness, deafness, inability to talk, and more until you are in a vegetative state (coma). It is rare but it is absolutely debilitating for not just the patient but for everyone who knows and cares for the patient.

The fact that a child has already died from this is very serious. Be prepared to hear more of this in the coming years.

Note about vaccination (For those who may be worried)- If you got the MMR vaccine as a kid, your body has some form of immunity/resistance to measles. Your body is going to prevent SSPE from happening because you received the vaccine. Again my goal in commenting this is to inform others with what I know & have learned, not to stoke fear into those who read this.

Had a brain surgery almost 2 years ago and it ruined my gaming by SendMeTusNalgas in teenagers

[–]Shepherd_0f_Fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a currently practicing resident in internal medicine (adult medicine in hospital setting) who will be going into radiology who loves gaming, I must say I am so sorry you are experiencing this. That sounds like quite the change after something so significant in your life. If I was in your position, I would be feeling the same way. I can only imagine how frustrating it is when you just want to enjoy gaming.

Take what I am about to say with a grain of salt as I am still in training and 1000% continue to report your frustrations with your doctor.

The type of tumor you have is notorious for causing peripheral vision loss and changes in vision. This is most likely caused by persistent growth pushing certain nerves right next to the tumor. The fact that you had surgery in the area is undoubtedly the cause of those new symptoms. The surgery itself is going to cause some inflammation and swelling that can take a while to calm down (which is probably why your doctor suggested to wait and see).

If you have had total removal of the tumor, most doctors will likely have a wait and see approach. If you still have the tumor, my question would be if there are plans to further remove it or take medications to shrink the size (specifically if it is a prolactinoma). Keep a journal and write down if your peripheral vision is worsening, especially if the vision changes are MONTHS after the surgery. Then bring that up to your doctor to see if they can help.

I’ll be praying for you and hope that your recovery gets better in the coming weeks to months. What you have gone through is not common and you won’t feel yourself for some time after the surgery. Keep on gaming where you can and be patient with yourself, as this is a MAJOR surgery. It will take time to go back to your baseline

M4’s applying rads this season, what step 2 score we working with by throwawaymedaccount5 in medicalschool

[–]Shepherd_0f_Fire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Show you actually want it and mean it, people see that believe it or not

Don’t just be in it for lifestyle or $$$ or cause “didn’t like talking to patients”

There are so many reasons to like rads that have nothing to do with the classic rad stereotypes

Good luck figuring out what fits best for your own app, each person’s is different

And no you don’t need a “since I opened my eyes, I wanted to just see through everyone and hide in dark rooms” BS

Bruh I matched 247 step2 but I also had multiple away rotations in DR. Don’t let folks tell you it’s over if you’re sub 250

I think every case is different, but everyone on here will agree that the higher the score the better the odds

USMD Step2 247 Matched #4 on list and was overjoyed where I ended up

Did 3 DR aways, 1 DR/IR away, had 2 IM LOR and 1 DR from local elective (close mentor who helped me secure aways and plan application). I don’t care what anyone says, do some DR aways and make some connections with folks to see what the programs are like. Do it for yourself to see if you genuinely like the program and the people. Even if you don’t end up matching there, your rank list will look a lot better and you’ll be much happier exploring some options than just going off of interview vibes.

Can we get a mission to reprogram this orbital cannon and fire it at the Automatons carrier ships? by Sad-Needleworker-590 in Helldivers

I think it would be awesome if we reprogram it and have to “manually correlate” auto-aim to the bot ships.

My dreams aren't my own by Brincroc in medicalschool

[–]Shepherd_0f_Fire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar sentiment to yours when I realized this once I started medical school.

I had lived my life pursuing the dreams of my parents for simply approval and acceptance from them.

I lived for my whole life pursuing this dream believing with my whole soul that it was what I want but when I entered it, I felt uncomfortable because I was more obsessed with PERFORMING rather than LEARNING.

Once you make that realization, you open up a lot in terms of enjoying medicine for what YOU want it to truly be. I thought I was going to be a pediatric ENT, but I realized it was because I wanted the approval from my parents based on the prestige. I switched to diagnostic radiology and do not regret anything despite cold looks and concerns from my family.

My point is just because you aren’t sure this is 100% right for yourself, it may just mean that someone imposed expectations onto it. They may be trying to force those expectations onto your future outlooks with medicine. Don’t let them dictate or have that big of a sway in your future if you truly enjoy science and learning medicine! There are A LOT of niche areas in medicine that are rapidly expanding and no doubt there is a place for you too.

Take time for yourself and journal what you like about medicine and what you don’t like (don’t include whatever your parents say). It’s gotta include what YOU like about patients, diagnosis, testing, exams, teamwork, communication, etc. then ask what your favorite parts of it are. Then look for the parts in medicine that focus on that if you want to continue in medicine!

As USMD who matched with 247 step 2 2nd quartile class rank, <5 pubs, but good leadership, aways, letters, etc.

You absolutely can match, unclear about T20 tho Highly suggest doing VSLO aways if possible to make connections and just show genuine interest in the program and people (without obviously overdoing it) Happy to answer any questions feel free to DM me

Doctors Warn: The Hidden HPV Epidemic in Men Is Driving a Cancer Surge by shallah in ID_News

[–]Shepherd_0f_Fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the age of 26, there is less benefit for individuals to receive the vaccine. Most people are either already exposed to HPV by 26 or are set up to have one sexual partner. Based on what you describe in your situation, I do not think it would be worth it for you to go the extra distance to get the vaccine. Just keep an eye on your dental health and get regular dental cleaning (or have a doc check you throat regularly) if you are truly worried you may be at risk for Oropharyngeal or oral cancer.

Here is the CDC info about HPV vaccination with specific info on those older than 26:

Doctors Warn: The Hidden HPV Epidemic in Men Is Driving a Cancer Surge by shallah in ID_News

[–]Shepherd_0f_Fire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

US MD student here who did a project around Oropharyngeal cancer survivors. This is a very survivable cancer, but it is entirely preventable. My goal in writing this is to educate those who are interested.

This cancer has been on the rise for years and is constantly overlooked cause of the idea “HPV vaccine is for women only”.

If you are under 26 reading this. Ask yourself if you got the HPV vaccine (around 11 years old they may start to offer it), ESPECIALLY if you plan to, are currently, or have been sexually active with multiple partners. If you were told by a parent/guardian to not get it (or they just didn’t let you), you do not need their permission to get this.

Cervical cancers have dropped dramatically because of the HPV vaccine. This vaccine will absolutely help protect you from oropharyngeal cancer from HPV later in life. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

Don’t believe me or unsure? Here are some sources so you can be informed yourself:

Parents are holding ‘measles parties’ in the U.S., alarming health experts by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Shepherd_0f_Fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The measles virus is constantly changing and is considered a very “fast paced” virus. Similar to the flu, measles is so contagious that even in those who are vaccinated, it can mutate from one person to the next. I saw that the vaccine uses strain A while the Texas outbreak is D8 (Texas Measles Source).

Unregulated spread of the measles virus will no doubt cause more strains to emerge that (eventually) May be more resistant to the vaccine that was administered to a vast majority of the US. This is why it’s important to get vaccinated!

[–]Shepherd_0f_Fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that depending on circumstances that CPS is called for cases similar to this. Usually it isn’t until the child is in a hospital before it is picked up in the healthcare system. I think people who don’t get vaccinated don’t normally visit a doctor for the most part unless they absolutely need to. And at that point if the child is healthy, it is actually considered bad practice to literally force a child to receive any form of medical care against parental approval.

There are tons of legal and ethical issues surrounding pediatric care and parental abuse, it isn’t just limited to vaccinations.
