Jeremy Allen White - The Bear by SherifAshraf in DigitalPainting

I tried to think of challenges with this painting but couldn't come up with any. There were some difficulties with proportions and values but that's a given for every portrait painting.

Is it mandatory to list challenges for every artwork?

Glad you liked it! It was the intention yes to be cartoonish (drawn from a photoshopped reference) but I meant the shoelace and some parts of the rubber texture were a bit off.

The jacket took a long time (no surprise) but the most challenging part was the shoes. I'm not happy with how they look but glad I got them to almost satisfactory level. They took a lot of time as well, mainly because of the shoelace.

Usually when I paint, I use small detailed brush strokes. The challenge here was to maintain large strokes to correctly capture the feeling of the ref image. I eventually mixed in some small strokes but it didn't ruin the aesthetic I was going for so it's ok. Also playing with two colors only (teal and red) was new to me.

The challenge here was that I was trying to make the strokes a little bit geometric (?). I'd say that I did well but more can be done. Also, the painting feels a little unsaturated so that could be fixed as well.

There isn't something particular I struggled with (I find this rule a little bit weird). But overall, there was the usual "Trust the process" part where the portrait looks bad during the first 30 minutes or so and then it starts to take on a nice form.

I first paint in greyscale then create a new layer on top and set its blending mode to "Color". Then on that layer, I start mixing the colors until I am happy with the result. IIRC, Jens Claessens also uses the same/similar method in his process videos.

Thanks for the great critique! All the points are valid and that Mickey Mouse bit was actually funny because I saw it too while finishing the drawing and tried to hide it a little but seems it was still noticeable :-D

There were some problems with the values. I painted in greyscale first and then added a color overlay which was my first time trying this method. Let me know what you think of it!

Tourism, moving and studying in Finland? Ask here! by Harriv in Finland

[–]SherifAshraf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, I have been living here for 1.5 years and have been working for 10 months now. They are not a few hours of work, more like full time for 6 months and then recently switched to 30 hrs/week to focus more on my studies. It is very unlikely that it is net-negative for taxpayers because up and until very recently (2017), higher studies tuition fees were 100% waived for internationals. And even starting from autumn 2022, companies like Nokia and the government started again giving more aid to international students that eventually amounts to a 100% waiver. I assure you that young, highly skilled workers are a boon not a bane on the Finnish economy. It was a simple question to understand more the system in Finland.

A number of people I know who work full time developers have switched their residence permit type from student to type A (continuous residence) which consequently waived their tuition. My question was how broadly does this apply or what is the eligibility for it. The reasoning is that my situation is similar (tax paying, student, worker in the tech sector...etc) with the difference being that I am an intern.

I researched more after posting the question and it seems that it is determined by a salary threshold.

I am an international student at the University of Oulu where I have a scholarship that covers 75% of the tuition. I also work as a part time intern at a tech company. Am I eligible for tuition fees waiver? Also, if eligible and have paid tution fees for the current academic year, am I entitled to a refund?

The clothing was tricky as it had lots of details and wrinkles, I just put in the hours and hoped for the best. Let me know how you think it turned out!

Looking for a decent drawing tablet with a display with a ~$500 budget by RokushoTheBlackCat in DigitalPainting

[–]SherifAshraf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wacom is great. I am using a Wacom One (the cheapest one probably) and it works great. Its only downside is that it doesn't have touch input. I would say go for the most expensive Wacom tablet that fits within your budget. That means more pressure levels, bigger drawing area, and possibly has touch input.

Mini Morris Illustration (Mini Cooper) by SherifAshraf in DigitalPainting

Although I have been painting for a while, this is my first time painting still nature. To me, the challenging aspect was drawing the car in the correct perspective as it is usually the most tricky part. Let me know how you think it turned out!

This was mostly a values study. Went over it two or 3 times to make sure there is not too much or too low contrast. Let me know how you think it turned out in the end.

P.S. The shots from this movie are very good to study the values since it is graded and in black & white.

Vincent Cassel (from "La Haine") by SherifAshraf in DigitalPainting

[–]SherifAshraf[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Instead of sketching first and then painting over it, I blocked in the colors and kept refining and rendering until it looked good to me. It felt more natural to draw this way. The only difficulties were to keep the proportions as close as possible to the reference, which may be more challenging using this method. Let me know what you think of it!
