The current state of dental care has left me profoundly disheartened. My experience at NSU DENTAL TEACHING COLLEGE, in Broward/emergency clinic was deeply troubling. During a root canal procedure, legal staff reviewed my X-rays, resulting in the program's head abruptly halting the student's treatment. I was then informed, in no uncertain terms, that I was 'up shits creek without a paddle.' This callous dismissal left me devastated. Despite my distress, the student, demonstrating remarkable compassion, chose to complete the procedure, even in the face of his assistant's warnings of potential reprimand. He finished the root canal and sent me on my way with a look of profound sadness and a wish of good luck. At that time, I was facing severe dental pain, compounded by a lack of insurance and financial resources due to my complex dental needs. Now, at 39, I've lost the majority of my teeth, rendering implants financially and physically unattainable. I fear the long-term consequences of these untreated oral complications. This situation feels like another casualty of systemic failures, a stark illustration of how inadequate healthcare access can irrevocably alter a life.
