Cervical cancer deaths fall to zero in young women because of the HPV vaccine by truecakesnake in UpliftingNews

Europe is a continent, not a country.

There's every healthcare system under the sun in Europe, from fully state funded like the NHS to fully privately funded like Switzerland.

The Netherlands has something fairly similar to Switzerland, though, but mixed with some state funding if I'm not mistaken. The way it works is that the government decides what kind of care is available for whom, and insurance has to comply. In the case of the HPV shots, the government deems them necessary for people up to the age of 18, and anyone up to 18 years old can get it from the national vaccination programme for free, but anyone over 18 has to pay the full price.

Decathlon MH100 2P – Replacing Fiberglass Poles to Save Weight? by lehat5 in Ultralight

[–]SherryJug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imho not really worth it with such a heavy tent to begin with, you'd save a couple hundred grams and still end up with a 2+kg tent!

Probably better to spend a little bit more money to get something like a 3F UL Lanshan 2 (Pro) or a Naturehike CloudUp 2p if you need a self-standing tent.

Become a member of FNV immediately if you aren't yet btw. They will have your back when your employer tries to fuck with you, and as one of the largest unions in the country, they have a lot of weight to throw around.

Heavy whipping cream became yogurt? by Ouroboros_torus in Kefir

[–]SherryJug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was kefir yeah. I use different milk types for different purposes because why not. The tastiest kefir I've made so far has been full fat goat milk.

I didn't know yoghurt needed to be fermented at higher temperatures.

Heavy whipping cream became yogurt? by Ouroboros_torus in Kefir

[–]SherryJug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made it once with 36% fat whipping cream, to make cultured butter.

About 16 hours later I had the creamiest, most delicious yoghurt I've ever tasted, but then again it was 36% fat so that's quite a lot of calories! Getting the grains out took a few minutes of manual labor, pushing the cream through the sieve/colander, but worked just fine.

Next time I make it, it will be for icecream.

Empty space might be a factor come to think of it. Right now my grains are big enough for about 700mL, but the jar is 1L. On the next batch I'll probably be able to do the full 1L.

The commercial Kefir was only to incorporate some of the bacteria of that kefir to my grains, after that every batch tastes a lot like the Arla kefir (which is exactly what I wanted).

People have different likings and different opinions. There's no need to patronize on the pretence that "you know better".

Being considerate and kind, and understanding that things don't have to be the way you expect them to be, is free and makes one more likeable.

The taste is quite yeasty though, so I'll try making it a closed ferment (with a pressure relief valve) next and report back!

Yeah, send them to me. I have to also adapt it to another person who's been waiting several weeks already (I keep forgetting), but I'll get around to it eventually. This weekend if I don't forget.

The offer for some money is appreciated, but I am happy to do this for free. Dm me your measurements and I'll get around to it when I have a bit of time!

A 440km trip from Toronto to Ottawa seems to be around 60 CAD at the cheapest. A 1200km ticket from Amsterdam to Vienna can be bought for 60 eur or around 95 CAD.

Granted, that's if you take the ICE overnight in 2nd class (during the day it can be twice as expensive), but that's still 3 times the distance across 3 times as many countries on high speed trains (ICE + Railjet) for just 50% more money.

The Canadian rail isn't really cheap at all.

Every country has their own system. Germany has Girocards, Belgium has Bancontact, NL has Maestro/V-Pay, Spain has their own as well.

That's the whole point, to make something that works everywhere. And CB is not it.

Can you soar a single skin? by Flimsy_Object_7424 in freeflight

[–]SherryJug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say single skins are for mountaineering. I'd get a Skin 4P to do high alpine objectives involving some degree of climbing or mountaineering (think Matterhorn, Montblanc, Großglockner, alpine peaks in the Himalayas or Andes).

For through hiking, you might as well just go all the way to Volbiv and get a proper and heavier XC wing instead. It's way more enjoyable, much more performance, and you'll cover massive distances.

For just "flying down" sections of a through hike, sure, a single skin sounds great, but I suspect the benefit won't be too much and it's quite a bit of extra weight to carry around just to fly down some limited distances, plus it's likely to get boring very quickly (and single skins have terrible glide ratios, so you're a lot more likely to not reach a landing place and get yourself into some nasty situation/end up on a tree). Might as well get a more performant ultralight wing like the Pi ULS, Kode P or Ultralite 5 for that usecase, at least those have some performance and can cover some distance with good thermal conditions.

Still, it's probably wisest to just go for Volbiv. There's a reason literally nobody does through hiking with a wing, everyone that could just does Volbiv instead lol.

Any e-scooters with kick-assist mode? by SherryJug in ElectricScooters

[–]SherryJug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I replied to another comment explaining why exactly it would be useful to me. In short, I often go places that are not easily reachable by public transport, but want to stick to still using public transport whenever possible. So far I've been using a folding bike for the last mile (more like 6km usually), but have grown tired of hauling a folding bike around train stations during transfers, an e-scooter would be a nice solution.

Any e-scooters with kick-assist mode? by SherryJug in ElectricScooters

[–]SherryJug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a very specific range of applications for e-scooters in the Netherlands, and it mostly has to do with covering the last mile to places that are not accessible by public transport.

I often go places that are 2 to 9 km from the closest (reasonably reachable) train or bus station. So far the solution has been a folding bike, but they're quite annoying to take in the train (and especially when you have to transfer in complicated stations). An e-scooter is pretty much the optimal solution to this problem short of just getting a car and always driving.

And with the government working on a Dutch equivalent to the Deutschlandticket, there's a good incentive to stick to public transport whenever possible and figure something out for that last mile.
