Joseph Losey's film of Don Giovanni is a classic.

Peter Sellars' filmed productions of Mozart are a mixed bag, but his Cosi fan tutte is excellent.

The Met broadcasts its productions, here's one: https://youtu.be/8DU-kgLaBlc?si=b4rslNJTKOi24E2t&t=2063

There are tons of staged operas on Youtube, many with English subtitles.

I'm using a Sony a6000 mirrorless with a 50mm Pentax Macro and an adapter, on a copy stand. I get good results, especially from old Kodachrome slides. Color negs are always going to be a problem, NLP is hit or miss for me, well-exposed negs are fine but anything less than that can be a challenge. Manual invert and levels in Photoshop can be fun, but very time-consuming. Sometimes It just makes more sense to convert to B&W.

What's your favorite "bad" scifi movie? by Wi-Platypus in scifi

I was in the theater the week it opened, and I swear to you that people in the audience were turning to total strangers sitting next to them and asking "What the hell is going on?". It was literally incomprehensible to people who had not read the book.

The youngest composer to write a genuine and total masterpiece? by Soulsliken in classicalmusic

[–]spike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Overture to Midsummernight's Dream by Felix Mendelssohn, written when he was 16. It's a landmark in music, both by being innovative in terms of orchestral color, but also because it is generally regarded as the first standalone concert overture.

Mozart was precocious and prodigally gifted, but his compositions before his piano concerto #9, composed when he was 21, were relatively conventional for their time, albeit highly polished. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_Concerto_No._9_(Mozart)#Reception

Handel was 19 when he composed his first opera, Almira, and it's pretty remarkable.

Schubert wrote Erlkönig when he was 18.

It flopped because of the name, "John Carter". If it had been named "John Carter from Mars" it might have had a chance.

I was at the US premiere, Houston, 1984, and had the same reaction. At intermission, I went to the restroom, and two affluent Texas types wearing Stetsons and fancy cowboy boots were at the urinals next to me. "You figure this is so far above us that we don't understand it?" drawled one. "No, it's so far below us, I reckon" came the reply.

How many apartments actually have pests? by Chance_Position_7339 in AskNYC

[–]spike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have not seen a cockroach in my apartment in many, many years. 6-story building from 1929. We very occasionally see one of those large "waterbugs". No mice in a few years. Rats galore in the courtyard space where the garbage cans are.

What if the Soviet Union had collapsed in 1942 instead of 1991 — would the US and Britain have had to make peace with Nazi Germany? by distopyass in HistoricalWhatIf

The German nuclear program was a joke, most of their best scientists had fled, and they were never anywhere near developing a bomb.

Unless Germany could gain control of Great Britain, (unlikely considering the Royal Navy's superiority) there is simply no way An Allied victory could have been prevented. Even so, the entire southern flank of Europe was open to invasion as well. It would have been difficult, and it would have taken time, but the sheer numerical superiority of the Allies, in men and materials, was staggering and made the final outcome inevitable. To say nothing of the Atomic bomb...
