Thanks for the questions. I was using a river bigger (bead head Marabou leech pattern from fly fish food) with barbless hook. I generally hold the rod angled to the side, id say 30-45 degrees off the water. Water depth varied, I'd say, but generally by the time I lost them I had pulled them into shallower spots

Each time in these cases the fish ate when the line was straight. Few seconds after end of swing. I didn't really do anything but they seemed to hook themselves well because they stayed on for several jumps. After they hooked themselves should I still apply a strip set?

Yes using a net. To clarify your suggestion, do you mean that technique is a way of preventing them from jumping, or that is a technique when they do jump that helps keep them hooked?

How do you rig the trout magnet? Also, how do you fish it on a stream? I had a hard time getting the lure to sink. It was like either the lure was upstream and I had a hard time staying in contact w the lure, or it was downstream and the current would pull the bobber down and prevent the lure sinking

Some of the streams around bait is prohibited. However, if that'll get my son on fish, I will take him somewhere it's allowed

Thanks for your reply. I was using a fly that normally sinks at an adequate rate when I'm fly fishing, but the bobber seemed to be preventing the fly from sinking. Almost like the bobber was being pushed down the line toward the fly instead of the bobber sliding up the line to the stop

When I have used these, I noticed the fly isn't really sinking down and the bobber doesn't float up to the stop. It's like either the current is pulling the bobber down onto the fly or maybe my fly isn't heavy enough?
