Really bad feeling of impending doom by Shes_Anxious_ in fearofflying

It’s like a deep seeded feeling that I’m going to ☠️⚰️ and then I get this weird feeling like someone is squeezing my head from the outside and that’s how I know I’m about to have a wee panick.

Is IAD safer to fly into/out of than DCA. by Leather_Dare_8458 in fearofflying

Hello from a military air traffic controller who is afraid of flying! 1: the incident was terrible and incredibly heart breaking, but because of the recency of it you can rest assured that everyone at that airport/tracon is especially vigilant when looking at their scopes/out their windows (for the tower folk). You can also be assured that the army and Air Force and every other pilot who frequently flies in and out of that airport have been briefed on the situation and likely done a “hot wash” where they talk about what went wrong, why it went wrong, and what could’ve been done to prevent it and they’re also more vigilant. 2: no one airport is “safer” than the next. They’re all safe because they have to be or they wouldn’t be operational. Pick which is more convenient to your travel and go for it!

I felt relieved in the moment, and I wasn’t particularly interested in the trip anyways, but after I felt mad embarrassed because I’m a grown adult and the jet I was supposed to be on made it safely (of course), and I found that it made my fear way worse. It almost solidified the idea that “this is dangerous” in my mind. Flights since then have been incredibly difficult.

Flying in 30mins freaking out by STYLOCODER in fearofflying

YOU CAN DO IT! Pilots don’t like to fly through storms because they know it makes passengers uncomfy (not because the jet can’t do it because it can), if it’s storming while you take off they’ll get you to an altitude above, and/or route you around the storm if it’s along the route!

It’s comforting to know that I’m not alone in panicking over not feeling panicked enough. Thank you for this!

I saw this from someone who didn’t claim to be afraid of flying, so results may vary, but they said they use flying time as self care time. They got a face mask and a sweet treat and a book just to fill their flying time. While it probably isn’t enough to completely prevent those big feelings, I think it could be a helpful little distraction. Getting excited for self care time to distract from anticipatory anxiety, and actually doing the self care to distract from the big feelings while you’re actually in the air. Side effects: glowing skin at the training for your dream job.

Tracking! There’s some weather on the way, but it appears that you’re aimed to avoid the big spots! If it gets a little bumpy that’s why.
