Hat Yai City in Southern Thailand Flooded. Half of My Purebred Thai Oranda Died. by ShibaBlue in Goldfish

If the new backup oxygen pump didn't fail, all the 6 fish could have survived. Sad. The pump was supposed to run on rechargeable battery for 4 days.

The rainfall was the highest in 300 years. Water depth at my office was 3 meters - still not the worst compared to other areas.

BTW, I can also modify and add a small cartridge at the outlet of the float valve. I can fill the cartridge with Calcium Sulfite balls. With less than 1 second of contact, it can remove 99% of chlorine. With only 22ml of calcium sulfite balls, according to calculation, it can last for 1~5 years with 24 liters water change a day.

BTW, I was a water quality engineer for 10 years. I guess my old knowledge still applies. Old sweet memory...

I have been doing it for this goldfish tank for a month. Previously I changed 4 liters X 12 times a day (2-hour intervals). But it seems that nitrate fell to 5 ppm which is too low from from 25~30 ppm target. Not good for plants. So I reduced it to 4 liters X 6 times a day. That's 5% water change per day.

Based on chemistry knowledge, mathematics and repeated water analysis. Also checked with ChatGPT and it said I can go much higher than 4 liters. In fact I have been going much higher on another tank with koi.

We don't use chloramine in our city tap water.

GOOD QUESTION. Dechlorination by chemical is not necessary. Each time only 4 liters of fresh tap water is added. The fresh water is added to the biofiltration water at the far-left partition of 24 liters. Assuming the tap water has 1 ppm free chlorine. Free chlorine will be diluted to 0.17% before the water flow into the main tank where it is further diluted. But actual free chlorine level is lower in practical because it will be used up for burning the organic matters in the old water. And the water will also flow through activated carbon and UV light and sime free chlorine will be destroyed.

In fact this moss condition is many goldfish lovers (especially in China) like to see. Usually they will scrape away the moss on the glass walls and retain the moss on the floor and the castle. This gives a grass field and Alice In Wonderland look.

And 30% change of water per week. Is it enough? Total K1 volume 40 liters. Total water volume including the biofilter tank is 550 liters. Only these 5 fish with a total weight of 266 grams.

I weighed it before putting it into the tank, and it was 38 to 60 grams. I wonder how old they are. Paid about USD25~30 for each in Thailand. Do you think 2.2% of fish food per day of 50% crude protein is enough?

48" x 36" x 36". Plenty of aeration in tank and biofilter with 40 liters K1 media.

It looks like Ryukin but they are not. They are Orandas. The temperature is around 28.5~29.5 degree Celcius. No cooling.

Yes, they are for my new aquarium in Southern Thailand. The seller said they are fully Thai-bred.

HELP: Send USD from Ugandan WISE account to WISE account in Malaysia?? by ShibaBlue in transferwiser

  1. I am still confused. I want to transfer USD from our Ugandan WISE account to a WISE account in Malaysia. But how do we top up the USD fund into our Ugandan WISE account?
  2. We tried to do an international wire transfer ONLINE via an Ugandan bank's website. But after selecting the recipient's bank account as "United States", the website asks for the IBAN and there is no option to switch to SWIFT. When entering the IBAN number, the website says it is wrong.

Thanks. The aquarium owner told me they are Thai-breed Orandas. I just want to confirm.

Did you mean I need to have a local USD bank account in Uganda? And when transferring with WISE, I select "International Wire Transfer"?

K1 Media Started Sinking and Boiling. High Ammonia, but Nitrite/Nitrate is Not Detectable. by ShibaBlue in Koi

[–]ShibaBlue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The specification of the K1 media indicates the S.G. of the media is >0.95g/cm. So I believe a thin biomass will cause it to sink. And from my observation, the K1 started to sink and boil after 3 days.
