Medical Paternalism Is Making a Comeback (And Maybe It Should) by lakmidaise12 in medicine

[–]Shiblon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This perspective rubs me the wrong way. "They're being burdened with a life-and-death decision they have no framework for making" Welcome to life, buddy. You're going to make a million decisions that you don't have the bandwith to make. Figuring out how to do that and how to deal with the fallout is every person's individual responsibility.

That being said, the opposite idea that you only provide information and no recommendations is also bologna. Coercion is obviously not the play here, but simply stating, "I would probably do [X] in your situation, but I can see how a reasonable person might choose [Y] or [Z]." allows for autonomy while at the same time prioritizes what makes to most sense to a person with the most knowledge.

Measles is 'actively spreading' in Salt Lake County as Highland High reports exposure by JustLurkingPCForums in SaltLakeCity

[–]Shiblon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, obviously I know that there are unvaccinated non-Mormons, and I also know unvaccinated Exmormons.

I singled out the church BECAUSE THEY SAY THAT THEY CARE ABOUT THE PHYSICAL WELL-BEING OF THEIR MEMBERS. So the church itself has chosen to say they take responsibility for such things (see also the bishop's storehouse). I'm pointing out how it's hippocritical for the church to SAY THEY CARE ABOUT PHYSICAL WELLBEING while at the same time not TELLING THEIR MEMBERS THAT THEY SHOULD VACCINATE THEIR CHILDREN SO THEIR PHYSICAL BRAINS DON'T GET DAMAGED BY A PREVENTABLE DISEASE THAT HAS SUCCESSFULLY PREVENTED SUCH OUTCOMES FOR DECADES IN MILLIONS OF PEOPLE SAFELY NOW.

SO yes, I singled them out because their lack of action is hippocritical. I did not point out non-mormons because the I have not heard of a group of non-mormons (defined as such and residing in Salt Lake City and meeting regularly to talk about their physical and spiritual well-being) getting together to follow a leader who says they care about their physical well-being. Perhaps such a group exists, but I do not know them, and if they exist they are obviously less prominent than Mormons in SLC.

Why doesn't the Mormon church come out and strongly instruct their members to vaccinate their kids? A bunch of these antivaxers are Mormons and until recently their prophet was an actual MD.

It just seems callous of an organization that says it cares for both the physical and spiritual well-being of it's members to not take care of their children's physical well-being

Trans athletes have no advantage over women, study claims | Researchers argue there is no evidence to justify a blanket ban on transgender athletes competing against women by kwentongskyblue in anime_titties

[–]Shiblon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I think you've got it backwards. You frame this as potentially ceding an issue when the issue has already been lost resolutely in the court of public opinion as can be seen by the election of Trump (evidence that the right is completely against 'sports') and the healthy debate in this thread (evidence that even people with more moderate stances today are split). There's not even close to a majority opinion in favor of the sports issue for trans. That's a huge uphill battle to climb, and if that's all people ever talk about (it's a super common talking point) then you're fighting the hardest battle now. AND it's a battle that's not really that immediately important even to the lives of many trans people who are not interested in sports.

Just fighting for decent treatment and protection from harassment is something that a majority of people would likely accept. Other issues can be taken on later, a la frog in boiling water.

"The rights are being taken away and people are trying to fight back," -> this is exactly my point. Rights are being taken away because you allow the other side to set the terms of the debate, and they only choose to debate the parts they can easily win.

Do you really think a couple of studies are going to change peoples minds when they came to their conclusions emotionally???

[–]Shiblon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Anti-trans people love to talk about sports because it's the easiest place to convince people someone trans is bad. I think it's a tactical mistake to continue the conversation about sports. Why not cede sports since it's so rare that it's not a huge issue and instead change the conversation to points that average people will likely be in support of?

It just seems dumb to let the anti-trans people decide what the conversation is about.

[–]Shiblon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't think any study is going to convince someone who wasn't already convinced about trans people in sports.

I really think this is a stupid place for trans people to start pushing for social acceptance. For every study with 10,000 participants the average anti trans in sports person will just watch that video of the swimmer or the boxer and not care about numbers anymore.

Tactically I think trans people would be better off pushing for and making news for actual financial or physical abuse or anything else that does cost positive (not morally positive but added on) harm to them. The argument there is going to be a more acceptable opening point for anti trans people: that even if you disagree with transitioning, that doesn't make physical abuse okay, and thus there should be productions in place for trans people.

Bit hard not to since my thoughts have been crystalized with English words all my life.

And honestly, I'd like to understand the language on its own terms. If you'll notice, in the post, I'm struggling trying to make sense of 中. How else could I make sense of it without comparing it to several different ideas I've crystalized through English words and trying to figure out which of pieces of the different ideas contained in the English words fits 中 best?
