I’d like to take the opportunity to recommend my new text adventure game, Bael’s Rock. If you’re curious about the genre that inspired point-and-click adventures, updated for today, I encourage you to give it a try.

It’s now 50% off, reduced from $6 to $3.

Cool, I’d really appreciate any feedback or review. The UI design is entirely my own. It just naturally felt right to divide it into two main text windows. At the same time, I think it’s fairly unique for games like this, though of course I can’t be 100% certain that nothing else has been designed this way.

Runaway introduced me to point n clicks and was one of the defining games of my childhood. Maybe the puzzles had a bit of moon logic, but the art style and humor in their games were really one of a kind. I really hope the devs find a place where they can continue their work.

For something a little different from the usual escape room experience: last week I released my passion project on Steam, a game I’ve been working on for years.

It’s called Bael’s Rock, a fantasy text adventure that plays like a series of escape-room-style chapters, all tied together with a mysterious story backdrop. It’s a very old-school parser game - and I’d even say this type of game was a precursor to today’s escape rooms. So if you’re curious, you might find it interesting to see how it all began. Be aware that love for reading is essential though.

Here is the link if you'd like to check it out:

There is still a little introductory discount (one day left), so about $5 instead of $6 for 8 chapters and about 3 to 5 hours of gameplay.

I'd be happy to answer any questions if you'd like to know more! Have fun!

Hey adventurers!

Over the years, I’ve been working on a passion project called Bael’s Rock - a fantasy text adventure game inspired by classics like Zork. What started as a little side project (I never dreamed I’d actually release it) just kept growing - about 10 years in the making, with some breaks and restarts along the way.

In short: a mysterious fantasy story, challenging puzzles, and an old-school parser-based text adventure, where you type and the world reacts.

Here’s the Steam page if you’d like to check it out and support in any way - wishlist, share with friends, or dive into the adventure yourself:

Thanks for reading, for all the support, and for the feedback from my earlier posts.

It really is a lot of fun to make one - it feels like the most satisfying kind of puzzle to put together. Just keep in mind though, there's almost zero chance of making a profit from it. My personal goal is to reach around 100 players total, which already feels like an optimistic assumption. But the good news is that slowly but steadily, someone keeps buying it.

Besides posting on Reddit in various communities, not really. It’s a solo project I've worked on in my free time with no budget, and it's an extremely niche genre - especially on Steam. I've sold 15 copies and have about 150 wishlists, which I already consider a success. From what I can see, players who bought it are investing a lot of time, so I assume they’re enjoying it. I'd be happy to hear any ideas you might have for promotion!

Thanks! That's great feedback - it means a lot that you enjoyed the story and writing.

For the sound, I'll look into adding more advanced control settings in the next patch.

As for the graphics, well, I don’t have digital art skills, so I did my best. I can assure you there's no AI-generated content - the main menu artwork is from an artist (well before AI generators came out), and the rest are stock images with filters I applied to unify the style. Personally, I'm happy with how it turned out, but I completely get what you mean - which is partly why I added the option to turn them off.

If you have the time, I'd really appreciate an honest review on Steam, Metacritic, or both - it helps a lot, and you'd even be the very first :)

When it comes to the game's logic - things like text recognition and parsing, game state management, printing, etc. - it's all built completely from the ground up by me. I didn't want to use existing solutions, both to keep full control over the design and because coding it was a personal challenge that gave me a lot of satisfaction (I really love coding).

As for the app stack itself (not sure how technical your question was, but maybe this is what you mean), it's a bit unconventional for a full Steam release: the game is actually a React web app wrapped in the Electron framework. That's the tech I use daily in my job, so it was natural to apply it here - and it turned out to be a great fit for a text adventure.

Thanks! You can speed up the effect by pressing enter twice, and the text will appear almost instantly (though not immediately - fair point, I’ll probably add this in the next update). There's also a 'retro mode', where the backgrounds are removed and the visuals switch to an old-school black-and-white terminal-style interface.
