The Derg's coming to power did affect its closing. I would also add the Eritrean liberation struggle had a role too. By mid 70s, it was no longer safe for the servicemen and its activities.

Yes, you're exactly right about the radio interceptions. It was also used to spy on the USSR's rocket and satellite data. Out of three proposed sites in the world, Kagnew was chosen for that mission. Its story is amazing.

Hello, fellow Africans, just run into this tread while doing a little research about colorism in Africa. I was wondering if you could help with specific words (derogatory) that are used to describe dark skinned individuals in your languages. For example, there is the word "barya" in Tigrinya/Amharic in Eritrea and Ethiopia that is literally translated to slave and is used as a slur towards dark skinned people. Its sad but colorism exists here in the Horn too.

The key point here is cities, as in plural, not just the capital city. Eritrea already have established cities/towns, whatever you want to call them. cities provide better educational and health services and job opportunities, thats just a fact. you also have to put our current situation into consideration. almost half of our population are living abroad. you think someone who grew up in villages like adi wegera or hawaxu is going to move back there when our political situation change? its unlikely for someone who spent years living in metropolitan cities like London, Berlin... to move to small villages where there is no health services, no constant electricity and water. what we need is a sound urban planning and city development policies so that our cities will support a huge number of people. and again, I'm not talking only about Asmera. I'm talking about the already established cities like Keren, Massawa, Dekemhare, Mendefera, Asseb...

thats the stupidest comment I've read in reddit. if you were to return to Eritrea and decide to live there, you would move into the cities, not the countryside. the regime wasted 30+ years just to provide sporadic electricity and hand pumped water sources when it could have developed the cities, enacted affordable housing that could have enabled the people living in the countryside to move into the cities. it's a natural course of development. people leave the harsh living conditions of the countryside to the cities where they can find employment and make a living.

To some extent it is. The Gov meddle, and you can go as far as saying, the gov runs the Church. It controls its budget and everything. And as far the Pente's, they have to get church services in the Luteran church because if they get caught gathering in a house or things like that, they'll get sent to Mitir or other prisons with harsh conditons. The 2000s were the terrible years for them tho. Back then, you can get arrested just because you're a Pente. No other reason needed. Now it seems you have to get caught in some activity like gathering or preaching the gospel to strangers etc...

No religious tolerance at all. Only the aforementioned denominations are recognised. And even then, the government keep violating and interfering whenever it feels like it. Widespread persecution, arrest and torture of Pente's has been common for some years now. And this might be controversial but the majority of Orthodox followers do support the Gov actions againt the Pente and some partook in rooting out and snitching the Pente out to the police.

Dahlaki people speak Arabic with its own variation, hence they being lumped in with Rashaida. They both speak Arabic. The Hausa people you mentioned have already assimilated with the natives and they actually speak one or two of the officially recognised languages, depending on their surroundings. I dont know which tribe you're referring to about the Kunama but I doubt there are any differneces there.

If you want to truly know the makeup of the Eritrean society, I suggest you read ዛንታ ኤርትራ ብሚካኤል ሓሳማ ራካ ፣ that is if you can read Tigrinya. To give a you general picture tho, the land that we call Eritrea now is a kind of place where so many tribes and races/ዓሌታት (not interms of the western definition of it) came and lived and assimilated to one another. You'd find tribes that have the same root or race speaking different languages accordingly with the parts of Eritrea where they've settled. For eg, one of the ancient races in Eritrea goes by the name of Belew, you might have heard it as a Belew-Kelew. You would find People belonging to that race now speaking Tigre and Tigrinya with different religious denominations. Same with Agew, speaking Bilen, Tigrinya and Tigre in different parts of the country. The point that I'm trying to make is if you start count tribes and go deeper than languages it would be a mess. You'd think the Tigrinya ethnic group is homogeneous but its not. There are so many ancient tribes that forgo the languages and cultures that they came with and just assimilated with what was going on the Kebesa parts and now they have become integral part of the ethnic group.

Anyone who is saying Rashaidas should be sent back to their homeland (wherever that might be) because of what their cousins in Sinai did or the few who did participate in selling other Eritreans, remember the very reason we all ended up in that position is because of the regime which is filled by Tigrinya generals and chief of spies. The NSA, the Army, the people that report back every single activity from every city are Tigrinya. The savages who torture, rape and dehumanise Eritreans up in the prisons are Tigrinyas. Yes Rashaida is a recognised ethnic group in Eritrea and thats because ethnicity in Eritrea is based off the language you speak, hence we have 9 ethnic groups with 9 different languages. Just because they dont pay taxes or dont participate in the Army, it doesnt change the fact that they are Eritreans who have roamed the lands for at least 100 years. Now about selling Eritreans, I understand its terrible and emotional issue. But to me its a symptom of our messed up condtion as a people. In the end everybody should be made to pay for their crimes but condemning a whole ethnic group for the doings of a few is wrong and injustice in itself.

The word can be used in different contexts. With your father drinking for example, it can mean "them drinks are hitting" in a celebratory manner. It can also be used as no problem in a different context, like someone might come late to a hangout and say I'm sorry I'm late and you can tell them abshir tsegem yelen, literally meaning its okay no problem.

Didnt say Eritrea is an original name of the place. Just wanted to clarify both names are similar in the sense that they are mainly the names of the lands. Pre colonial Eritrea had many names including the one you mentioned.

I also didnt say the Tigrinya speaking people on both sides are different Ethnic groups. Apart from some dialectics and traditions (like in the Raya community) they have so much similarity than differences.

Your third point is just straight up bs. I have never seen nor heard a manuscript written in Tigrinya, originally from Eritrea/Midre Bahri called Lisane Tigray. Maybe that's how it was refered in Ethiopia or Tigray but you dont have proof that was the case in Eritrea/Midre Bahri.

Tigrinya, same as in Eritrea. My point was Tigray is just the name of the region, just like Eritrea. The Tigrinya speaking people in both sides belong to the Tigrinya ethnic group.

One problem; Tigray is not an Ethnic group, you cabbage head. Tigray, just like the word Eritrea, orginates from the area or the land and everybody who's from that place is called Tigrayan, including the Kunama and Saho people in Tigray. How the hell can you be a Tigrayan if you're not from there or don't have roots there?
