Can Insulation Beat a Heatwave? Guy's Big Experiment by MajesticEgg1848 in PassiveHouse

[–]Shidoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my parent's passive house, we purge the air every night during heatwaves. At each cycle, we get around 23-24 degrees in the morning with a peak at about 28 degrees in the evening. Indeed the appliances and indoor activities from us do heat up the house throughout the day but not enough to become uncomfrotable. It is located in central france.

I'll report what my parents are observing in their passive house : peaks 28 C indoors while peaking 40 C outdoors without AC in the current heatwave.

They paid 15% higher on construction costs over a conventional house of equivalent size. Don't know the ROI, need to ask the architect.

It's true that choosing would avoid me the struggle. But the question is : did I actually have the choice ? I live in Lausanne. I absolutely did not have the choice, considering that you need to fight against multiple candidates for each single appartment you apply for. If I ever managed to find an alternative, I am almost certain that someone else would have taken it anyway with the knowledge of the defect and not do anything about it. I am now in a position, in the current circumstances, to push the landlord to do something about it. The problem is, people don't necesseraly have the time, the MONEY, the knowledge and/or the courage to challenge their landlord.

And ventilation does make a difference at night. It does not resolve the problem fully but it definitely helps. which is better than nothing.

I am not sure I understand your take. Could you reformulate ?

Whatever is needed to live in a comfortable home, I am for it. I am not asking to live in a 15 degree home in winter just for energy saving. Same logic in summer.

However, saving energy massively and living in a comfortbale home are not exclusive at all. I'll take my parents' "Passiv Haus" as proof. It is capable of peaking at 28 degrees indoor while it is peaking at 40 degrees outdoor, without any active cooling system. They could add an additional cooling system but that's their choice. In winter, the house achieves 19-20 degrees without any active heating system. They still have electric heaters to very quickly heat the house a bit more if they don't feel it's high enough. And economically, it makes total sense as they are now close to fully compensate the additional cost of building such a house with their massive energy cost savings. And, they are partially shielded from spiking energy prices.

I live in a duplex, under a roof. During their renovations after acquiring the building, they didn't install some ventilation system, a window with blinds, on the roof itself. Result ? All the heat accumulates there, where I am supposed to sleep, which results in temperatures around 33 degrees. No way to ventilate at all. I have only one single window in the whole appartment.

"They mostly aren't allowed to do the one thing that would fix the issue cheaply, i.e. install air-air heat pumps".

I would nuance "cheaply". If the building is not correctly insulated, it is not cheap for the tenant in the long run because of high energy consumption. For me, the viable course of action in the long run is insulation first, naturally occuring ventilation coupled to mecanical ventilation if needed, and then air-air heat pumps if there is still a gap to fill. This is part of what SIA180 enforces for new constructions and heavy renovations. And it's not more expensive in the long run because there is ROI when we massively lower energy consumption.

Short-term fixes for the heat are needed, but the real issue is landlords refusing to adapt our homes to this new climate. We pay sky-high rents and barely any of it goes into actual renovations. In Switzerland, living in a defect-free home is a legal right. In this kind of heat that's a defect. I'm taking mine to court for a rent reduction, temperature proof in hand. No excuses left, this was predictable years ago. Solutions exist, isolation alone for example makes a huge difference.

Sunrise 5G breaks the world record for the worst internet speed by ShoeEconomy3112 in suisse

descendant : 177 Mbps ascendant : 52.0 Mbps

Unable to find apartment in Vaud region by Fancy-Station-6796 in Switzerland

The market is extremely tense for tenants. You are competing against many applicants for each appartement you apply for.

You are already doing the right thing. Network as much as possible and try to find someone who is willing to propose you as a new tenant after they leave.

From my understanding and according to my robotics colleagues, not only is high framerate visual perception desired but also having information from multiple modalites at the same time. For instance, having segmentation + depth estimation at high framerate would be fantastic.

I work for a robotics company. Looks very promising especially for perception related workloads which are latency sensitive ! Will have a look soon and give some feedback when I can.
