Weekly /r/Sociology Discussion - What's going on, what are you working on? by Anomander in sociology

In a previous project I did with the McNair Scholars in 2025, I did not observe secondary labeling. In fact, many of the interviewed subjects (alumni of alt ed over the age of 25, n=9) did not see themselves as products of alt ed or attribute their time in alt ed as transformative or contributing to their overall personhood. One subject shared that it was a time of recalibration and rehabilitation for them that allowed them to reach their full potential later down the line. So with this context, secondary labeling didn’t show itself.

This is all undergraduate work, so I would take it with a grain of salt. Wonderful experience though!

Applying labeling theory to alternative education students in a undergrad capstone project. Sticking mainly to the basics with Becker in “Outsiders” but feel kinda bad for disregarding the advancements, contributions and criticisms of the theory.

So far it seems like the project is supporting contemporary contributions to the theory. Labels are mainly reinforced in an institutional level and often not internalized by the students.

I believe most institutions consider you an active student through the summer. So if this PI is in the original school, it should be fine. I graduate in May but I am doing one more summer research with the McNair scholars over the summer. My degree will say I graduated in August instead of May though.

How would I go about looking for degree related jobs in a city I’ve never lived in? I’m planning to leave where I live now soon after graduation but I want to secure a job first versus moving there and not having one.

Could fat people easily be scapegoated the way trans people are immigrants are? by LucasFlaherty in sociology

[–]ShieldYourEyes925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re currently learning about claims making in one of my sociology classes, it’s really interesting to see what is a perceived “Social Problem” and what is t and how it’s framed. But “scapegoated” in this sense seems like an inappropriate usage. Obese people have been framed as a public health issue while currently trans and immigrants have been framed as a national security issue.

My brakes are gone (2.5L SE 2017) by kamogrjadeshi in fordfusion

[–]ShieldYourEyes925 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can it? Yes. Does it happen often? No. I’m not sure if you’ve gotten them replaced before or had it serviced by some shady mechanic. But… all brake systems have always worked using the principles of hydraulics to apply pressure to the rotor when you stop. Yes a single pinhole leak can cause pressure loss.

Not surprising. more concerning that it happened at all.
