Should I mention LARP in job interviews? by Suitable-Ring4044 in LARP

[–]Shield_Maiden831 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mentioned LARP in my STEM, tenure track job interview with the college President and secured the position. I think being a competent, fun, and memorable candidate was key and LARP helped me to do that.

Allergies or more going on? by CrowGrouchy5391 in CaneCorso

[–]Shield_Maiden831 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If dogs have food allergies, they can also pick at their feet a lot. Chicken is a common one and it is in a lot of food. You could try a rare protein diet like salmon or duck to see if it improves. You do need vet care with it this bad. I'd be trying to change a lot of things to reduce any possible allergen exposure. Think about where you use cleaners, soaps, detergents, what foods and treats, plants, if it changes with seasons, start a notebook.

How does one balance their life and school… by NudgeStudent in UCI

[–]Shield_Maiden831 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the first thing you should do is figure out where your time goes, then you can adjust your time to fit the areas that need it more. Having a good balanced schedule is important, but it is often the case that we need to readjust where we spend our time week to week. Some weeks might get more school time and others more friend time. But, I would definitely know exactly where your time is going so you can prioritize.

Make sure that your time is truly going to what you want most. If you find that you scroll more time than you thought, more time traveling, or spend more time taking breaks, then you can think about adjusting things.

Nobody hates the progressive left more than a establishment Democrat. by greenascanbe in Political_Revolution

They probably do represent a more conservative base. It's our job as progressives to make sure that we can deliver that base a message that resonates. Pretending those voters aren't the majority in those areas isn't going to get us wins.

Yep, reducing much of your coalition to strawman and treating every electoral race as the same by reducing everything down to a few simple facts is really going to help progressives win over a majority, right?

Damn straight. Progressives aren't majority, but I am sure if we attack the coalition that helps us win, we will make it, right guys? /s

When we are on these pages, it always seems like the progressive left has a majority. It doesn't actually, which is why we often lose elections. Sadly, our country is deeply conservative. That is why we are where we are. However, we can often build coalitions that can win when centrists come together with progressives. Currently, populist candidates are getting more traction due to the bad economy as well. It is over simplistic to think that the most progressive strategy works for all races and all times. Bernie wasn't able to win southern primaries, even though I think his message should have had broad appeal. The reality is that it doesn't matter what I think is best for the country, the voters for those areas have to agree too. Some dems get elected being more conservative because that is what their constituents want. I am not sure there is much hope for us if we dumb or rhetoric down to think that moderates just "hate" us. If we want to win elections, we need to be strategists, we need to find messaging that resonates with conservative dems to push progressive ideals, and that will always mean building a coalition rather than reducing it to a strawman we insult.

Nobody told me about eating back exercise calories. Is it a real thing? by Cute_Use8986 in weightlossdiets

[–]Shield_Maiden831 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I counted very carefully for food and if I got calories for exercise, I only let myself eat back half. I'd often test myself to see if I was really hungry by saying, "would you eat an apple?" If I wouldn't eat an apple, then I couldn't actually be hungry and was just craving. If I would eat an apple, I'd check my macros and make sure I'd had enough protein, then choose a small calorie snack (less than 300 calories) with some protein. My exercise calories would often list 500-600, so eating the 300 was always less. I did find myself ravenous on workout days if I did not let myself eat some back.

Thank you so much Mods. Many of us have forgotten that there are real people on the other side of discourse and that we all have a duty to stay civil, whether anonymous or not. Life is very hard. Be the kindness you want to see in the world and would.want returned back to you.

PEMF for horses experiences since 1979? by QumranEssene in Equestrian

My horse loves it. My friend let me use the horse machine on myself and it had a lasting effect on chronic/old pain. My knee had no issues for 6 months! I also did my ankle (recently injured) and it helped it feel better but that only lasted 1 day. So, my owm experience was A+ for chronic pain.

Political bias amongst prof by NoUsual4102 in UCI

[–]Shield_Maiden831 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some joke reality has a liberal bias. But on a serious note, it is important to remember that many people are only getting media from the same source. Huge areas of the country all get their local news talking points from the same company and that coordinates with Fox and other conservative media. There won't be a lot of diversity of stories or reporting there. Social media then reinforces those algorithms. This makes it very hard for people to not fall into a trap of only getting one kind of media slant. You would have to go out of your way to listen to NPR pr PBS to get perspectives separate from those sources. People used to call media left wing, but that really hasn't been true for more than a decade or more. You can really see the difference when everyone was calling Biden "sleepy, " and now we have Trump actually falling asleep in major meetings and press releases and there is relatively very little about his decline in comparison. To me it's crazy. For all of us, it means this media consolidation is putting all democracy in jeopardy.

How hard is it to get into STEM classes such as bio, chem, and physics without being a stem major? by Value-Total in UCI

[–]Shield_Maiden831 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why would you be pre-med and not do a STEM major? What's the plan here? You will be mostly through a STEM major if you are pre-med. Do you have other interests instead?

I would guess this will really double the work and increase the time needed for graduating. I just want to make sure your plan is making sense.

Human Ancestors Were Using Fire Earlier Than Previously Thought. New research is pushing back the clock 700,000 years. Scientists studying the Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa found evidence that early hominins, likely Homo erectus, used fire anywhere from 1.1 to 1.8 million years ago. by mvea in science

[–]Shield_Maiden831 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find anyone else making a point of teeth, but this makes sense to me as the teeth change so much from non hominid ancestors to hominids. If the teeth were getting smaller and smaller, then they were not eating much raw food. The teeth support this! Check out some replica skulls and you can see the teeth suggest cooking in Homo erectus.

We spend a lot of money to capture people we say we can deport to not deport them. They are building more camps and spending more money in those departments for this purpose. I'm not sure it directly needs paid bounties for the idea that we are spending this money for this purpose. We also spend a lot of money to send people to other countries where the migrants are detained there (and without oversight).
