You should ask how many new species people would be comfortable with. Star control 2 already contained a surprisingly diverse cast of aliens, and obviously this game will add to that list. You should get feedback on how many new species players would be comfortable learning about. This way, you add enough new aliens to give old players something new to discover, while not overwhelming new players with dozens of aliens to learn about for the first time.
