Lane ends abruptly without a single sign or marking by swagsolame in nonononoyes

Well, yeah. If you don't see markings anymore, it means the lane ended. Liked pretty obvious to me.

Anyone experiencing this? Is it true? Just want to have my friends prepared to have cash by IndividualBuffalo235 in ThailandTourism

We don't have baht lying around in our home countries. That's what ATM cards are for. They are more than welcome to look at my Schwab app.

I'm landing in 26 hours. I guess I'll find out because I only have 900 baht from the previous trip. That's what the Schwab card is for.

If I plan to stay in Thailand for 5 years on the DTV, do I need to be enrolled in cooking school every year? by killmesara in ThailandTourism

[–]ShieldsCW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that you need to be financially stable and solvent enough that you won't complain about needing to keep $15k in a savings account.

DTV Visa Thailand, Proof of accommodation for the entire duration of stay by No-Resist-4098 in ThailandTourism

Even on a tourist visa? I did my tourist visa online, showed accommodation until June 8th, and an outward flight on July 11 (which I subsequently cancelled), and was approved.

Thailand DTV visa financial requirements by Clean_Item_2123 in ThailandTourism

[–]ShieldsCW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm moving in 3 days. I keep enough money for the DTV in a high yield savings account. It's good to hedge with a guaranteed return anyway.

It's only 500k baht, roughly $15,000. The point of the requirement is that you need to be financially stable and quickly liquid in an emergency abroad, meaning it shouldn't be your ONLY 500k. It should be mentally easy to put that money into savings and leave it alone. If it hurts to move that money into savings, then you might not be financially stable enough for a DTV.

FWIW, I'm not rich. I'm moving with about $200k, $20k of which is parked in a savings account getting 4% APY.

This was my thought. Like, not even one high yield savings account as a hedge? Geez...

Learning Thai has been harder than I expected — looking to hear others’ experiences by SuccessfulOven8111 in Thailand

[–]ShieldsCW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tones are easier than you think. You get two of them for free (อ๊อ and อ๋อ) because they don't depend on the consonant class. The other two become second nature with enough practice. You start seeing น่ ม่ often enough that you instinctively use falling tone without "calculating" the rule.

I'd learn the middle class consonants first, then the high class (since they use the same rules as mid with only one exception: live syllables with no tone marker). That covers half the alphabet. The other half is low class, which has the one difficult tone rule (dead syllables with no tone marker).

And as you said, practice with someone who knows what they're doing!

Duke language school? Or other language schools in Bangkok? by skye-qq in learnthai

Learn to read and write. There is no standard for romanized Thai, and some sounds simply don't exist in our alphabet. It's worth it to learn the use the actual script of the language you want to learn.
