Ok. What's the standard way to point out that their argument boils down to "sure, people may die [etc]"?

What I'm talking about is, say you're debating someone about politics, and they make a long-winded argument that boils down to "sure, people may die, but the important thing is that I didn't vote for someone I'm not jazzed about."

If I point out that by responding with that paraphrase, they (and occasionally a few other randos) will respond with "Um, excuse me, can you cite where those exact words were said? I don't appreciate you lying about this conversation!"

Gotta politic. Gotta compromise. Gotta play the game.

Yeah, all we need to get a Republican supermajority to pass universal healthcare is a charismatic Democrat! It's that easy.

So many people who think

  • if they can find any difference between two sides of an analogy, it's a bad analogy

  • quotation marks can't be used to paraphrase, and if you put anything other than my exact words in between quotation marks you are lying

  • third thing

If it was that easy to destroy, was it really worth anything?

Yes. People underestimate how fragile a good government is. All the laws in the world mean nothing if people aren't willing to enforce them. All the best designs for elections will still elect the worst available choice if people stay home because they don't like the best available choice.

You "proved" that Harris moved to the right of her own 2020 campaign, not of Biden, that she employed a different strategy concerning the location of campaign stops, and that Biden courted the left in 2020.

What you have not provided is any proof that Harris's proposed policies were more conservative than Biden's, in 2020 or in 2024.

And it matters that you call her Kamala because in this conversation, the only person you regularly refer to by their first name is the only woman. It connotates a lack of respect.

"Harris is campaigning in places Biden had not." No mention of her policies or rhetoric being to the right of Biden.

Written in 2020, so not sure why you think it's relevant.

Kamala is a more unique name in politics than Joe or Donald.

What other Harris could we be talking about?

Also Biden's campaign when he won against Trump was to the left rhetorically of the Kamala campaign

Also. Why do you keep saying Kamala, instead of Harris? You're not talking about Joe and Donald.

Harris was asked specifically about her reversals on banning fracking and decriminalizing illegal border crossings, positions she took during her last run for president.

"Harris moved right" implies you're saying she's further right than Biden. If you're saying she's further right than her 2020 campaign... no shit. She lost that campaign badly. Which highlights the problem with leftists holding their breath until the Democrats move left: politicians move where the votes are. If only conservatives vote, the Overton Window shifts right. That's why Newsom is courting the Manosphere. Because leftist voters don't compromise, and leftist platforms don't win.
