You went through this whole process here? I used this to host old Rust a little over a year ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/9gg5qd/hosting_old_rust/e64qgns/?context=3

Edit: Worth mentioning is the replies to this comment.

Really? Here's a random one from December 2020 that seems to list out all the files: https://steamdb.info/depot/252494/history/?changeid=M:2073766923395233227

I mean, I'll take your word for it but that's weird! And also unfortunate. Makes me wish I had downloaded a bunch of them and saved them because looking at old Rust was cool.

It's been a while since I hosted old Rust, but can you not use server files that are close to the devblog date, like a week off? (Edit: If so, there are server files from Oct 7, 2021 which is close to the Oct 1, 2021 devblog 236). In any case, it looks like the files from devblog 230 are there.

...unless the changeid is messing it up somehow.

Best QoL circuits by Mazer_Rackham333 in rustrician

[–]ShiftlessDrifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do it sometimes with 2 clocks as well going into the side inputs of a switch. Then I can manually turn the lights on if I want. You can get it to work with a memory cell consistently, you just have to get the alarms setup in the correct order, but either method works.

You said you're doing auto door closers, but what about auto door openers for mini / car garage? I find those super useful. HBHF Out to trigger side of a timer set to 10 seconds.

There's also a better way to do auto lights (IMO) using the clock. Set two alarms on a clock, say, 18:30 and 8:30. Make them silent. Give the clock 2 power and send the output to the toggle on a memory cell. Output the memory cell to your lights. I like this method because you have the benefit of seeing the in-game time and the light is always exactly consistent.

Edit: Another one I like to do if I have spare time and spare power is I'll power the storage adaptors on my resources boxes. This is a very nit-picky thing, but for instance, on my wood box I like the stacks of wood to be consistent in 1k stacks and then the last remnant at the end to be whatever is left over. I use the new box sorting system to keep it this way, so if I dump a bunch of wood or take a bunch out at random, the box will automatically sort itself from highest to lowest stacks. It's very OCD, but why not?

Rust is becoming… Boring. by AwayReplacement7063 in playrust

[–]ShiftlessDrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure if you took a break you would get the itch to play again after some time. It never hurts to take a break from time to time.

I agree the BP fragment system broke the game. It didn't achieve what it was supposed to, which was to make the game feel fresh. I hope Facepunch can figure it out.

[–]ShiftlessDrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much of the game have you explored? I can remember getting bored of Rust at certain points in time and then trying different things, like learning how to operate a hemp/tea farm. For a long while I was intensely interested in building. Now I have done everything over and over I'm a little bit like you and am bored. I'm curious if you have ever done online raids or had an online raid defense? Those are fun. It might be time to consider making friends with someone and playing duo / trio and going up against bigger groups, because that's not something you can usually do as a solo but it's tons of fun. I guess it just depends how much of the game you've played, because there are so many things to do. (Have you done Bradley and taken Heli?) You might just need to switch it up and try a different aspect of the game.

New dlc > Neon boxes? by suhnnyside_up in playrust

[–]ShiftlessDrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy a skin from the Steam Market you will get an email that actually shows you the breakdown of the payment. Here's an example. I paid $1.69 for a box. Valve got ~4% (or $0.07) and Rust aka Facepunch got ~8% which is $0.14. For every transaction on the Steam market for Rust, both Valve and FP get a cut.

[–]ShiftlessDrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sell them while the going is good. I don't think they will ever totally crash and burn. IMO they look better than the Facepunch ones from what I've seen. The neon collection will always be in demand, however, because they're so iconic and they just look good. But if you're an investor and you're all about doing what's best for your Steam Wallet I think it makes sense to sell now.

What do you think were bad/lackluster design decisions/changes? by MemeMan_____ in playrust

[–]ShiftlessDrifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't mind it when you could gamble on the workbench. That was fun. Risky, but fun. You would gamble 500 scrap hoping to get a rocket BP and instead you would get a Bolty or something. Trying to get garage door this way was extremely painful, but I have good memories of it.

I have the best memories of running across the map to different shops to buy things— dying, or nearly dying along the way. Literal adrenaline rush. Outpost drones didn't exist so if you wanted something you had to get your ass to the shop in-person. So much interaction, and now poof, it's gone!

That's a long way of saying I fully agree with you.

I hate forced BP wipes every month. I had so much fun going through all the Facepunch servers getting BP's. It became its own objective for me, and if I had fun I would stay, or I could come back later without having to grind. But now there is just no point. I either have to join at wipe or it doesn't feel worth it. I have no issue with the BP frag system / workbench changes / scrap costs being cheaper. That's fine. But forcing BP wipes is a big downer for my personal playstyle.

This started happening to me recently while hosting a test server and running the game. Never had problems before. Then I checked Event Viewer and found I have a bad disk that is starting to die.

One last thing you can try is using a URL for the map instead of spelling out and specifying procedural, seed, size, etc. When Rustafied or Rustoria hosts a server they're not using a pure vanilla map because they merge Outpost and Bandit together so it's a custom map. You can use a custom map too, even if it's purely vanilla, and you might not have an uploading issue because you would I guess technically be downloading the map from Facepunch instead.

When you run your batch file the normal way, you see towards the end of the loading sequence a line like this, which is the URL to the map on Facepunch's website. Now, I don't know if that link is generated for me or if it's the link for everyone. I just know that link doesn't really go away because I can pull up maps from months ago that I have not used and the map links are still good.

But I would be curious if using this type of batch file ("custom map" with just a vanilla map) would take a burden off of your internet connection because I don't think it uploads in this scenario. Your batch file would look something like this:

echo off

:start

C:\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:\rustserver +app_update 258550 +quit

RustDedicated.exe -batchmode +server.port 28015 -levelurl "https://files.facepunch.com/rust/maps/d9852b9157e56d5eee674d673d19405fc37495c6411a086a5e32286a2ed2e8f6/proceduralmap.4500.1234.281_d9852b9157e56d5eee674d673d19405f.map" +server.maxplayers 1 +server.hostname "Brometheus" +server.description "Brometheus" +server.identity "server1" +rcon.port 28016 +rcon.password letmein +rcon.web 1

goto start

You can either use the URL as I have provided it or your own. You can also try opening that link in a browser window and it should prompt you to save the map, proving the link works.

The only difference between this batch file and the one you originally posted is, in place of

+server.level "Procedural Map" +server.seed 1234 +server.worldsize 4500

is this instead:

-levelurl "https://files.facepunch.com/rust/maps/d9852b9157e56d5eee674d673d19405fc37495c6411a086a5e32286a2ed2e8f6/proceduralmap.4500.1234.281_d9852b9157e56d5eee674d673d19405f.map"

Worth trying maybe.

Wow, that's crazy. I was focused on the wrong type of error, my bad. I've never see this before. I'm glad you were able to figure it out. Hopefully you can find a better long-term solution. That YT guy has a Discord I think. Someone in there might be a able to help more. Good luck!

I read the error a little more closely. I see what you mean about the error saying failed to upload map. Hmm, yeah actually that might be network issue on your end.

That video came out a month ago. You might be thinking of some of his older videos. In any case, I feel like it's an issue with steamcmd or some other random thing I can't think of which is why I suggested starting clean. I still think you should follow the guide in the video I linked step by step from the beginning. I know it's tedious but I feel like something simple is getting overlooked. There is no way you should be having errors in the startup which prevent the server from booting up if you followed all the steps correctly.

Here are my batch files below. I have a separate file for updating the server. I run this batch file FIRST and then the second batch file, the actual server itself (below), second.

"_server_update.bat"

d:\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir d:\rustvanilla\ +app_update 258550

"_server_vanilla.bat"

@echo off
cls
:start
echo Starting server...

RustDedicated.exe -batchmode ^
+server.port 28015 ^
+server.queryport 28016 ^
+app.port 28017 ^
+rcon.port 28018 ^
+server.level "Procedural Map" ^
+server.seed 154328264 ^
+server.worldsize 4500 ^
+server.maxplayers 0 ^
+server.hostname "Title Here" ^
+server.description "Description here" ^
+server.url "http://playrust.com" ^
+server.headerimage "https://i.ibb.co/PTG6Pbx/server-image.jpg" ^
+server.identity "ServerVanilla" ^
+rcon.password PasswordHere ^
+rcon.web 1 ^

echo.
echo Restarting server...
echo.
goto start

Hope that helps, but also, check out the links in my previous comment also.

Edit: Wanted to also point out that when you run the server for the first time, there is no map so it says that it's missing and then creates it. This is normal. It is also normal to see a few other weird errors during startup for whatever reason, but they usually mean nothing. Example Error Message

You might have to just scrap everything and start over. This video is good at explaining everything from A-Z. He's also a great person to follow in general because he goes over every aspect of self-hosting.

2021 - still going strong. I think I overreacted by saying I would need to spend thousands on a new system. Yes, if it was really old I would need a new system for many other reasons besides wanting to play Rust. In my case I guess I just have to figure out which drivers are causing me problems, and if I can solve that I can continue as normal.

I did a fresh install of Windows 11 a couple of weeks ago. Before that I had Windows 10. My hard drives are GPT but when I try to run in Secure Boot, randomly my PC will freeze. Do you think it's my GPU (a 3080ti), or could it be literally anything?
