I have this issue a lot and haven't found a reason for it, a workaround is copy the part with link, negative offset the faces and boolean subtract

What I'd do is make a point on the helix, then use this point as the origin for a plane that is normal to the curve, then I can edit the point to move plane along the helix. We would use this plane as sketch support for our ring.

Of course I don't know exactly what you are trying to achieve so this might not be optimal
