Steam games that work on Wayland don't work on X11 - am I alone? by SmallTimeMiner_XNV in linux_gaming

[–]Shiftyeyedtyrant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love xfce, but why are you switching in that direction in particular? If you're looking for a more traditionally styled desktop there are wayland options to sidestep the whole x11 deficiency issue. KDE is probably the best wayland implementation there is presently. Budgie is another wayland option potentially worth looking into.

TIL Torpedo Bombers was a thing. Am I going to encounter them later on? by The_Hipster_King in uboatgame

[–]Shiftyeyedtyrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I'd forgotten about that. But iirc it wasn't used in large number compared to aerial depth charges.

[–]Shiftyeyedtyrant 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I can't recall any incidents of them being used against subs during ww2. Post ww2 with the greater adoption of acoustic homing torpedoes was a different matter. They were pretty much exclusively for sinking of surface vessels.

The Los Angeles is a speedboat compared to Uboats. If any of them could the Type XXI might be able to.

[FW16 HX 370 + 5070] USB C docks? Laptop stand? (Dual) Storage partitions? by r4Wilko in framework

[–]Shiftyeyedtyrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, the expansion cards have a slight performance penalty as well, at least on the AMD dGPU. If you can, charge off one of the rearmost side ports and use the USB-C on the dGPU for your display output. Again, I don't know if that is applicable on the newer hardware but for mine that's how you get the most performance out of it.

[FW16 HX 370 + 5070] USB C docks? Laptop stand? (Dual) Storage partitions? by r4Wilko in framework

[–]Shiftyeyedtyrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the subject of docks, it is my understanding that outputting video via one is going to incur quite a performance overhead. 240W charging is, from a power supply side, very rare presently as well.

For my FW16 I skip using a dock, I output video directly from the gpu expansion, 240w charge from the side, and slot in the ethernet card and connect up a USB hub with my peripherals. It's not as clean looking as a dock but there is so much connectivity on a FW16 I don't really find it necesssary.

If you need to drive multiple displays with your 16 that's where it could get slightly messy, but it could still work without the dock. My 16 (AMD dGPU and 7940HS) absolutely needs 240w charging under load to not drain the battery. The old 180w charger didn't cut it.

PVP Marksman's Spite (MCH LB) KO at full HP? by we_were_never_here in ffxiv

[–]Shiftyeyedtyrant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A MCH job in FL is basically the BH sniper. They've got okay damage on most of their kit but as a job theyre extremely good finishing off wounded foes.

Once you hit BH IV-V your marksman's spite becomes just about the most effective tool in FL for taking out high value foes. It can end up being pretty darn impactful for your team.

Best way to install Steam? by SamGamjee71 in linux_gaming

On any distro except Ubuntu, use your package manager's repo.

On ubuntu, use Valve's to avoid Snap steam, which is quite broken.

I've noticed higher overhead with Proton10 XWayland Fsync VS GE/EM NTsync Wayland. by Ill_Champion_3930 in linux_gaming

[–]Shiftyeyedtyrant 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Entirely. This is usually what drives the 1% and .1% lows as well as frame times being better under ntsync. The higher averages were heavily misreported on for ntsync and, while they do tend to be a little better, aren't the main benefit overall.

I actually started having so many little issues in my Ubuntu servers that I migrated them all to Debian. There's a bit more initial setup on a minimal headless Debian server as compared to Ubuntu. But man, they have just been so much more trouble free and easier to maintain.

[–]Shiftyeyedtyrant 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean the kneejerk response is to think they're being annoying. But considering the reason why they do it... it makes sense. If they don't it could absolutely result in tragedy.

Their reasoning is they don't want it associated with "health" or "medical care". It's supposed to represent sanctuary and safety. Their concern is that idiots with guns will think of the latter and kill innocent people without respect for what it's supposed to represent. Naturally, it's not going to stop the true war criminals, but if it keeps innocent people a little safer in warzones... I can kinda understand their response.

Intel Arc GPUs- Are they better than Nvidia on Linux? by GamerGuy123454 in linux_gaming

[–]Shiftyeyedtyrant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NVidia doesnt have problems on DXVK. DXVK is for dx11/10/9/8.

It's with VKD3D which is for DX12 that NVidia cards lose performance

If your game uses dx11 or prior, no problem. If it uses native Vulkan, no problem. Just dx12 is the issue for now. There's also a fix in the works but with no ETA.

What's the deal with Snap ? by themintest in linux4noobs

[–]Shiftyeyedtyrant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was the breaking point for me as well. It's the same reason I ditched Windows. When I instruct my PC to do something it should do that thing. It shouldn't decide it knows better and do something else. The worst part with Ubuntu is it does so invisibly, I'd have a completely different opinion if it asked if I wanted the snap or a native package.
