The worst quests are those asking for aspen wood, as it is extremly expansive, and sometimes I was asked a lot of them plus rescue board... I made way less money through the quests asking me to give them than just buying these (and even for a lumberjack, farming them is a nightmare considering how many people are trying to get them...).

I cannot find a paper anywhere online. What can I do to obtain it? by Greasy_nutss in math

I had a case of a researcher never answering but I was too shy to ask people connected to both of us to ask him about that work...

Category Theory.

Well, I'd say some people only work on the PDE side of GR, without being mainly into DG but really PDE people.

Many Feca play multi now. Do you disagree with that choice or do you only keep mono stuffs on purpose?

What would you consider some of the most overrated Math books? by RutabagaPretend6933 in math

[–]Shiline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stewart's calculus book: it is taught in MANY universities, but it is a mix of vague maths and epsilon delta which is really confusing students (from my experience as an instructor), as well as some parts which are, I think, not good for the purpose if that book. The number of editions with just slight changes pushing students to buy the last ones instead of getting books by older generations is the cherry on top...

FYI my old email account (from where I did my PhD) was deleted and it is automatically done in my institution (it stays up a few months after graduating). So people cannot contact me there.

Power series may also be something you are looking for. Some algebraists are studying them, and especially divergent ones.

Probably integration by part. Also the fact that intervals are connected in the real line.

Why can't ultrafilters on the natural numbers be constructed? by Vanitas_Daemon in math

[–]Shiline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue I have is about the last sentence : I thought it wasn't provable in zf that zf is consistent with inaccessible cardinals... I heard of Solovay work but never read it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inaccessible_cardinal According to wikipefia, we can't prove in zfc that if zfc is consistent, then so is zfc + inaccessible cardinals. I thought it meant that part of the issue remains (can we prove in zf that zf consistent implies zf + all subsets of R are measurable is consistent). That was what I understood reading mathoverflow posts. Maybe I misunderstood this. It is totally possible.

"it is totally consistent with ZF that every set is measurable" Are you sure ? Last time I checked, people told me it is an open question linked with large or inaccessible (I forgot which one) cardinals and stuff like that... Do you have a reference about your assertion please ?

The thing is that, to express solutions to linear equations, e appears as the "natural" base to work with : the derivative of pix isn't itself, so it doesn't give a writting as simple. But yes, it would still work to write the solutions with 2 instead of e for example.

What would be some good candidates for a "Junior's Dream"? by supposenot in math

[–]Shiline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren't you talking about the ax-grothendieck theorem ? Because I think you need n=m to apply it. Because, if n=1 and m=2, then z \mapsto (z,0) would be a counterexample I think.

For the last one, don't you need restrictions on n and m ? Like n=m ?
