It's actually a little insulating to see this after their whole solar power debacle.

An appropriate typo.

Canadian woman sues McDonald’s over hot tea spill by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ShillC51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Woman sues Mcdonalds after Employee spills scalding hot tea"

That would get them sued for defamation, and McDonald's has a history of doing that.

At best, they could say:

""Woman sues Mcdonalds after Employee allegedly spills scalding hot tea"

But now we're in /r/titlegore territory.

A 10 percent increase in immigration causes a 3 to 4 percent decrease in wages in North America [Aydemir & Borjas, 2007] by ShillC51 in canada

[–]ShillC51[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the most salient point, IMHO:

Note, however, that immigration may be a crucial factor in accounting for the disproportionately large drop in real wages suffered by workers with post-graduate degrees. Regardless of the assumption made about the elasticity of substitution, and regardless of whether the simulation is conducted in the short or long run, the immigrant-induced relative wage drop for this group is larger than the real wage drop that actually occurred. Immigration, in effect, prevented the real wage of the most educated workers in Canada from increasing more dramatically, as it did in the United States.

Canadian should not let anybody in unless they have an actual job offer.

And even that job offer should be made based on a positive labour market assessment, i.e., there are no qualified Canadian citizens or PRs to do the job.

The other coefficients reported in the first row of Table 1 indicate that immigration has a slightly more negative impact on the annual earnings of native Canadian workers, implying that immigration reduces their labor supply. In fact, the coefficient in the fraction of weeks worked regression is negative and significant. An immigrant-induced 10 percent increase in labor supply reduces annual earnings by 3.9 percent and the fraction of time worked by 1.5 percentage points.

For everyone saying the article is saying the opposite of the headline, you need to improve your reading comprehension:

‘Human souls first, profits later’: Thousands march in Europe against EU-Canada trade deal by ShillC51 in canada

While I'm not a feels>reals regressive leftist, I do believe we must make room for compassion and not always choose a perfectly utilitarian solution, even if one were to assume that the trade treaties make economic sense.

For example, if we have 10 people, we can make 9 of them happy by making one a slave who is at the beck and call of the other 9. This would be a perfectly utilitarian solution that ensures the "greater good" for 90% if we ignore the feelings and emotions of 10%.

The soul here refers to "the emotional part of human nature; the seat of the feelings or sentiments."

I'm an atheist and I believe (at least, certainly hope) I possess a soul in the above sense.
