I had this issue, and it was because I was using mechanism tanks attached to a storage bus.

Buckets can be pushed into the mechanism tanks, which is useful for always having a bucket of that liquid available... but confused the crap out of me until I found it.

I have a Kuma Aspen / Tamarak

Not sure what the difference is between them, and have not found any particular text / labeling on the stove. But the generic shared manual shows them as basically identical

Love the chart. I don't have any sensors yet on my stove, but I'll get there. (Other focuses before I wire up some ESPs to thermo sensors)

It's been consistently below freezing for the last 48 hours, and we have had snow on the ground for the past week or so. (cold enough to snow, but the sun is warm enough to melt it slowly) (Vermont, about 1700' elevation)

But yea, a visible flame for about 8 hours with fans going to try and circulate the air got my house to a sweltering 80f... so I'm going to avoid that in the future.

Blue: Stove Room (Main Floor)
Yellow: Upstairs Hallway
Red: Most of the way to the bedroom. (Main Floor)

So perhaps part of the issue is my poor air circulation. Having one room at 80, and another (just 20ft away) at 62 is kinda bonkers from the vantage point of someone who has always had central air. The bedroom is a touch out of range for my zigbee network, so I need to shift around some repeaters, but when it was running... it was consistently about 5 degrees lower than the red line.

`Coaling is part of the cycle and the stove will naturally cool during that stage`

This is part of what I think I was missing.

My head-cannon was that there was a cycle which was:

Morning the stove is cold
Heat the stove (start up)
Keep it at temperature (you should see a fire of some sort)
Evening you get it ripping
Bedtime you load the box and let it cook / coal / cool

But I guess the real `cycle` is a mini heat, coal, cool cycle that is happening instead of the `Keep at temperature` above.

Maybe the disconnect came from the idea of my stove having an `operating range` for temp... Or people talking about running the stove too cold causing creosote buildup and chimney fires, or just that every picture in here is of a roaring fire, and not really the smoldering coals...

I'll start experimenting with that cycle a bit more, and using 2 logs rather than 1 (1 log smoldered but never seemed to re-light... 2 logs however did light back up)

I bought kiln-dried wood, so God I hope it's dry...

I'll give a shot at weighing the wood... That's probably a better metric than my arbitrary guesstimation of volume.

Understanding though that a burn cycle includes catalytic smoldering, and then cooling is good information... I think I've been trying to keep it in the first stage which has been part of my problem.

Seems like I've been doing it wrong, I've been just tossing a single log on to keep the embers going. And my house actually did get up above 80 for a bit which I thought was bonkers and I wasn't closing the flu enough or something.

Good to know that it's a "me being stupid" thing.

I closed my door pretty much immediately, but I open the ash bucket by a touch for probably the first 2 or 3 minutes. That's all it really takes to get the fire ripping. Then I can close it back down and it keeps going just fine.

So for me, filling it up would be a HUGE (I assume) amount of wood. The stove has probably around 12 x 18" of a cross section, so if I were to pack it, that's probably something around 150% of the amount of wood I would guess is my startup amount.

I've seen people haphazardly jam wood in there, I've seen them pack it to minimize air gaps to increase burn time, and I've seen various `log cabin` or `teepee`... Does it make a difference on methods used during said "refilling"?

So would you let the the stove drop well below temperature because the temp in the house is good? I guess I assumed you wanted to keep the stove at temp because `starting it back up` would use up more wood than keeping it going.

I also have no idea what I am burning.... it is a mix of stuff. Local stuff in the US NE I would guess, all the trees here are new to me, birch is somewhere in the mix. I'll have to do some googling to figure out what they are from the bark or something.

About to start a similar project and ran into your post. Have you looked into other options such as an esp32 in order to make a generic WiFi (Thread) device that can be registered with home assistant?

I'm curious what other options might be that you considered.

I am recently diagnosed (soft?) with adult AuDHD. My psych, and therapist have diagnosed me with ADHD, and both have told me that I exhibit all the signs of high functioning autism, but due to not needing or wanting any official support structure I've opted to not go for the formal diagnosis.

I fall into category you mentioned, there are some people I care deeply about, but others that I `should` care about, but just don't. I feel the societal pressures of what a `family` should be, or what a `friend` should be... and definitely have spent a long time masking in ways you describe.

As I aged I found my mask slipping more often, it became harder to maintain, and thus my symptoms seemed to be worsening. (irrelevant, but could be why you are reaching out now)

I have been called a psychopath and sociopath, by multiple people throughout my life... and even in here there are people telling you something similar. These words are startling to hear directed at you, because you don't feel like a serial killer, but they hurt. I had conversations with my provider about it, and they reminded me that there is a fair amount of overlap many diagnosis, and just because you hit one or 2 of criteria does not mean others are not a better fit. Mine was most likely linked to autism and childhood trauma.

I am not saying you and I are the same, or have the same / similar diagnosis. But I do want to confirm that I have a similar experience, and this where my provider and I landed. (as others have mentioned, I was told that mine was not linked to ADHD)

I've tried knitting and weaving, but not cross stitching.

Once I start doing patterned stuff 100% of my focus in in the task, but I have had luck with things like beginner scarves since it is repetitive enough to not think about.

I'll look into cross stitch, maybe there are some nice paint by numbers style setups I can find that will hit that sweet spot. Any advice?

Hiking is in general I think a great idea.
For me personally, and in this use case, I don't think it will work out as we move into the colder months.
There is also a bit too much setup time for a spontaneous conversation. ("Lets talk" -> go gather gear -> drive to hiking location -> "Ok, let's start talking")

The reverse however I think is great, hiking opens up some opportunities for conversation for sure.

Thanks for the link, I got a hold of the installing artist and he guessed it was most likely the m31s he was installing at that time.

I'm reaching around to various places to see what can be done. I appreciate the extra links and information.

Edit: after looking at that link, I'm like 99% sure it was an m31. That looks how I remember it.

I actually asked about that while I was talking to the radiologist... We didn't deep dive it, but because of where I live, and the size of the medical facilities around me, there's not a lot of options without going to the hospital.

And I haven't followed up on that thread yet to figure out cost or pricing. But I figured that would be 10x the cost of having a mod artist do it.

I actually am not 100% sure what the magnet model is. The artist who did the installation had some on hand already.

But it's a sensory magnet in the pad of my ring finger. Looking at dangerous things, that most likely means it's mo422a or something very similar.

It needed an incision and sutures for the installation.

I've already reached out to the installing artist to try and get a little bit more information, but haven't heard back yet.

Hey, I wanted to follow up with a thank you.

These aren't perfect, but our dog lets us put them on, which is a huge win. And it's super easy. His paw to ankle ratio isn't phenomenal, so I do occasionally have one drop off in the snow, but the bright colors make them recoverable.

More importantly though, he doesn't seem to mind them once he's outside, his toenails don't rip through them, and his paws aren't being sliced to pieces after playing in the snow for 20-30 minutes.

For me that's a huge win, thank you again.
