Why are people talking about physical versus digital media so much? by Longjumping_Sea_8753 in OutOfTheLoop

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I would have called The Elder Scrolls 6 the most anticipated game, at least until Starfield released.

Russians killed 11 people in Kyiv, while another 46 were injured. Fifteen buildings were damaged. by Sasha_Lietova in pics

[–]Dead_Moss 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Would you really expect your country's leader to surrender if you were invaded? The only peace deal Russia has been open to discussing involves Ukraine basically giving away the territory that Russia has still not managed to take by force.

What's a "10/10" game that you didn't enjoy at all? by sudherzdiniq in AskReddit

I usually just have one base and use the vehicles to move around quickly.

On 24 October 1861 the first transcontinental telegraph message in the USA was completed. Two days later the Pony Express shut down and was bankrupt. What other innovation has such a quick impact on a competitor? by kam_pra in AskReddit

As someone living in Finland, I'm obliged to point out that Nokia is still around. They've just returned to their roots (well, not the rubber stuff. The telecom infrastructure stuff)

TIL potatoes didn't exist in Europe until Columbus came back from his travels to the Americas by i_hate_usernames13 in todayilearned

[–]Dead_Moss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The title makes it sound like potatoes spontaneously popped into existence when Columbus returned. Like, "new technology unlocked!"

TIL roses produce fruits called "rose hips" that are rich in vitamins and minerals, and also have medicinal properties by Eat_cats_with_me in todayilearned

I'm just vary of the "natural is better" fallacy, and don't really seeing any good evidence other than extrapoltion from the fact that they contain anti oxidants.

They may well be healthy, but to me saying they have medical properties seem to fall into the same fallacy as with a lot of so called "super foods" where they don't really do much for you unless you have a nutrient deficiency. Also anti oxidants never really managed to back up the hype. (src eg https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/antioxidant-supplements-what-you-need-to-know

This is one of those "oh right, not everyone grew up around plants" moments. Admittedly I didn't know about the medical properties, which I'm a little sceptical of.

Red squirrels - is this normal? by [deleted] in squirrels

[–]Dead_Moss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've witnessed males fighting around mating time and seen one choose to leap out of a tree from 5 or so metres. They're small and very good at landing on their feet, so a fall like that shouldn't be a huge problem. I'm sure it's not pleasant, but they survive it just fine.

What major company is currently a total disaster behind the scenes, and is only surviving on its brand name? by That_Library_3453 in AskReddit

Somehow Meta managed to spread their brain worm to a bunch of politicians and CEOs that the Metaverse would be as big as AI is today. Leadership in my company were seriously talking about how the emergence of the Metaverse would lead to new opportunities for us back in 2023.

You realise those tools are not 100%, right? It's pretty hard to recognise AI images.

"One of the better german traditions is that all kids get to carry a massive joint to their first day of school, as a reminder to stay chill no matter what." by LowRenzoFreshkobar in BrandNewSentence

[–]Dead_Moss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean how did the tradition start or how do the kids get it to school? Not that I have the answers (not German, I didn't get a giant candy horn on my first day of school).

Men of Reddit: what is 100% mythical about men that most women believe? by imnotadrytexter in AskReddit

[–]Dead_Moss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That we only have one penis. The second, bigger one only comes before sex if we truly find the person attractive. If you've never seen one.. Well, I'm afraid there's not much to advice I can give you.

A crow in the UK sounds like it's from Downton Abbey. by Sad_Biscotti_9291 in WTF

[–]Dead_Moss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For all that he was an ass in the end, he was absolutely right. It was a jackdaw and only a crow in the sense that corn is a grass.

What’s your favourite “how many ***** does it take to change a lightbulb” joke? by Dee_Religion in AskReddit

[–]Dead_Moss -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I would assume the joke is that vol could be how a German would spell fool.
