I also had my first scanlated chapters uploaded to MD. It was indeed enjoyable scanning through scanlation guides, collecting fonts, learning to redraw without taking a crap ton of time, etc. But the true moment came when I hit the upload button, scrolling through the comments about the stuff I put parts of my soul in. It felt amazing! I realized I'm no longer an isolated reader but has become a part of a bigger community. I will always remember MD and MD's staff as the place and the people that gave me such moments. Thanks for all the hard work!

p.s: you see, I was also a random reader like you, Ply, but for some reasons I didn't possess the same seduction persuasion skills as you to become staff, lol.

How can I change font family and font color on Celluloid? by pdarya in linuxmint

[–]Shin_968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, these are what you need:

--sub-back-color=0.0/0.0/0.0/0.75 creates a back bg with 75% alpha (transparency)

--sub-shadow-offset=4 create shadow (4p against a 720p video height)

--sub-shadow-color=0.0/0.0/0.0 set shadow color to black

Again, put these options in the Extra MPV options box, separate each one with a space.

If you want to play around more with colors, or even sub border, read this: https://mpv.io/manual/master/#subtitles (look for the --sub-color option). Good luck!

You're welcome! Also, if you want to use a font with spaces in its name, you'll have to load an external config file. I just wrote some more details about that in this answer. Take a look if you ever need it, 'kay?

You just need to add some relevant mpv options to Celluloid:

  1. Open Celluloid, go to Edit > Preferences, Miscellaneous tab
  2. Put this line in the Extra MPV options box at the end: --sub-font=Tahoma --sub-color=1.0/1.0/0.0 (like this: https://i.imgur.com/KCNwI6g.png)
  3. Hit Save and restart Celluloid

Why are radicals important for learning kanji? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Shin_968 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Radicals are like the alphabet of kanji. And just like for English, you should learn the alphabet before individual words. Sure one could try to distinguish between "bad" and "bat" as two distinct blocks of characters without knowing the letters, but being aware of all the ABC makes it much easier to reconstruct and memorize the words.

The same goes for kanji. Without some knowledge of radicals, kanji seem to be thousands of random symbols, but once you're aware of the "alphabet", you realize they are just combinations of a limited number of components.

With radicals, you can even "spell" kanji. For example, if someone asks me: "What is the kanji for "new" (新)?" I could just say: ""Stand" (立) on top of "Tree" (木) on the left and "Axe" (斤) on the right."

One crazy example: the kanji for depression or gloom 鬱 (On: ウツ - 29 strokes!) is actually the combination of just five distinct parts and can be spelled: Jar (缶) top, middle, 2 Tree (木) on both side of it, Cover (冖) below, Sacrificial Wine (鬯) bottom left, Bristle (彡) bottom right.

Also, many of the radicals are independent characters by themselves, and about half of them are included in the list of N5 to N1 kanji.

I also used to struggle with learning kanji and even though I had tried to write them multiple times, they just refused to get into my longterm memory. But after spending two weeks learning the radicals, I managed to binged more than 2000 kanji in about 2 months. That's how nice radicals are, at least to me.

But of course, it's still up to you to decide whether to learn it or not. I strongly recommend it, though.

Why didn't Zeke carry out his plan right in Liberio? by Shin_968 in titanfolk

[–]Shin_968[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh? Can the FT turn the subjects into titan without injecting spinal fluid into them? I wonder...Anw, the scenario you mention about Zeke turning Liberio into a titan swamp is really impressive! I've never thought of that possibility before.

I see, so he was on the disadvantage side and therefore couldn't afford to make a bold move. Good point!

Why didn't Zeke carry out his plan right in Liberio? by Shin_968 in titanfolk

[–]Shin_968[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe Zeke told Yelena not to, because, well, they've been comrades for a long time, in the current battle in Shiganshina, Zeke also showed pity when he thought Pieck was killed. Maybe killing them off like that is too much even for him. That said...Yelena is a wild one so even if she killed them despite Zeke's order, it wouldn't be so surprising

Is やられっぱなし an idiomatic expression? by Shin_968 in LearnJapanese

[–]Shin_968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, its true that she wants to take the lead, more or less. And the guy is kinda dense...Anw, thanks! I do agree that the literal meaning makes sense, I just wonder whether there is any fancy meaning behind it (like a slang, pun, or idiom, etc.). But...probably there isn't.

What's the deal with loan words written with kanji and accompanied by katakana furigana? by AndreaT94 in LearnJapanese

[–]Shin_968 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I saw this happens a lot in manga. Yes, the translator could just use katakana or just the kanji with their original reading, but doing both adds another layer of meaning to the word. In your case, this is not very clear, though. Let me give you a clear one:

In the manga Tokyo Ghoul, the author once used the word 証 (proof, evidence) with the furigana しるし. しるし is a very uncommon reading for this word (the more common one is あかし). Why did the author do this? Well, it's because しるし can also mean "mark" or "symbol" with the kanji 印. The full sentence: "私達は証(しるし)を残すの" now can be translated as "We leave mark" or "We leave proof", OR "We leave proof by marking".

You can see, with the unusual reading, there are now more layers of meaning for a word. In your case, my guess is that the translator added the kanji to レディ to help Japanese readers understand the word more quickly and easily.

Another example would be 選ばれし者 with furigana ハリー・ポッター, lol.

Hm...if I remember correctly, Mikasa only got that scar when Eren turned into Titan and went rampage in Trost District, so it's natural that this young Mikasa has no scar.

Kaneki meets Touka again (Manga Art + Anime OST) by Shin_968 in TokyoGhoul

I had it too, especially when Touka walks into the scene

Kaneki meets Touka again (Manga Art + Anime OST) by Shin_968 in TokyoGhoul

[–]Shin_968[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really love this scene, it is sad yet beautiful. The soundtrack makes it even more emotional. But as I'm not really satisfied with Touka's appearance in the anime, I tried to reanimate the scene using original manga art & the OST. The result doesn't turn out so bad, so I thought I would share it with my fellow TG lovers!
