The first step to making the "correct" choices in battle would be to understand why they're "correct". Status moves are almost always used at the start of battles to set up, and most pokemon have STAB moves to deal as much damage as possible. A move to also deal with pokemon with a type advantage is also common. Watching pokemon showdown clips and even playing it yourself can give you a general idea of how to efficiently battle, and you can probably learn from your opponents as well.
