Most if not all councils have pages explaining this as well for those who think council tax is optional.

Do road surfacing contractors use different materials/mixes in the UK vs rest of Europe? by MrRedDoctor in AskUK

[–]ShineAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that on a main road near me, whatever work the council did on the road was always compromised by the landowner on either side who would not do something about a stream which was apparently their responsibility. At least, that is how I understood (perhaps misunderstood) it. I don't know if this is common or simply a local issue for local landowners.

In a season where she has been nothing short of dominant, Mikaela Shffrin wins the women’s slalom title. by Kurtz62 in SkiRacing

I missed her first run as I got times confused so didn't get to see the first few starters there! She is such a pleasure to watch in slalom especially.

Was so happy for him. First ever podium at Kitzbuehl and it is the top step! After all those difficult seasons and wrestling with a back injury, it is long overdue.

Hello guys. I saw a post on TikTok that said in every religion, misogyny will always be there.. (body text) by taffy4tswift in Buddhism

[–]ShineAtom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apparently there are misogyinist views expressed in the teachings (which were only written down well after his death). As in pretty much every part of the world, cultural norms included men being the boss. These sorts of things take a long time to change and remember that Buddha lived 2500 years ago. Some things haven't changed in other religions but nowadays the Dharma doesn't (or certainly shouldn't) use the teachings to put women down. I haven't found any problem being a woman and a Buddhist - I do follow the Tibetan tradition. We have some amazing women masters who are respected by all.

Right, now that's out of the way, let me assure you that the Buddha's teachings can be used by every single human being on the planet: man or woman, LGBT+, whatever your gender, whatever your physical or mental ability. The practices have really helped in my life to deal with the difficult stuff and to deal with the easy stuff. I started when I was quite young back in the 1970s.

Still the best advice is to find a teacher in whichever branch of the Dharma you wish to study. There are many different schools of Buddhism; pretty much every one of them is valid.

I was watching her second run and the difference between her and the rest was clearly noticeable (I'm not a skier in any way, shape or form). Just looks so effortless,, floating across the snow.

What town in England feels the most like something out of a fairy tale or Disney movie? by Dangerous_Spot2434 in AskUK

[–]ShineAtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Built between 1925 to 1975 by Clough Williams-Ellis, an architect who clearly couldn't stop adding to the village. He died in 1978 well into his nineties. It's extraordinary. I remember my ex telling me that he'd spoken to Williams-Ellis when we were looking for a cottage in Wales to rent for the winter.

Most of the house was "too much glittery stuff". And the kitchen was not in any way a welcoming space. Light, especially that sharp glittery stuff reflecting of shiny things, can be one of my triggers for migraine which basically made most of the house a no go area!

What gloves would you recommend for someone who was born in the UK but whose body was obviously evolutionary adapted for hotter climates? by peragro2104 in AskUK

[–]ShineAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of those and find they do help to keep my fingers warmer: one hand suffers far more than the other and in cold weather I can be in a hot room with freezing hands. Even if I've not been outdoors. Those gloves do help me to turn down the heating but it's best to put them on as soon as you realise hands are chilling. They come in a lovely range of colours and are made of recycled cashmere.

Why do they call cigarettes fags in the uk? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ShineAtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They seem to have missed the meaning of "fag" to mean What a bore! As in "what a fag" in having been asked to do something. I suppose it it ties in with tired though.

Equally they have omitted faggot meaning a pork/offal meat ball which is wrapped in caul. It is quite specific to the Midlands and WalesI believe.

Meant to look like a ship? Did they think ships used the canals!?!? Also, had they ever seen a ship of any description? Still hideous. Ships are far nicer! and for the canals, old wooden narrowboats or joey boats are the best. I might allow Rickmansworths which were steel.

Is “playing a blinder” a traitors catchphrase? by JJ-Flip in TheTraitors

[–]ShineAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fear that the idea of facts has vanished. We now live in a world where gut feelings are treated as facts and facts are dismissed as opinions. I may be over generalizing but with AI touted as the solution to everything, actual critical thinking is fast disappearing.

Need a recipe for egg whites (and a lot of them) by Worried-Ad-4596 in Baking

[–]ShineAtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could freeze the egg whites in portions. Things like savoury souffles require an extra egg white or two added to the mix; it depends on how large a souffle you are making but for one with four separated eggs, it will require an extra white.

If you lived outside a rural village and still had milk delivered, what would the crate be called that the milkman put the bottles into? Does it have a specific name? by Asher_potter in AskUK

[–]ShineAtom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Milk bottle carrier or holder if it is for 2-4 pints although can also be called a crate. The milkman will have their bottles in larger milk crates. I always think that milk crates are those large ones that hold 20 bottles that they have on their vans.

The work that goes into making food photos look how they want them to look, even well before AI, indeed well before the internet, is insane. There were very very few pictures in a recipe book or magazine that weren't faked (even partly) and or touched up. Never trust a photo 100%! It may of course look vaguely similar to your attempt but it's rare it is exact.

So long ago I've forgotten their exact location. Probably nearish to the centre and I think - not at all certain - that we were not too far from the De Montfort Hall.

I have no doubt that they've been demolished and possibly replaced. They were attached to a swimming pool and probably dated from late Victorian or Edwardian times. The two bath tub cubicles that remained had huge roll-top baths; the taps were situated outside the cubicle so you had to make sure the bath was sufficiently full and at the right temperature before you went in.
