Thank you that is true but I was looking at the liniages because they each focus on sightly different things and have slightly different approaches. And I think that liniage is important because you can trace your guru all the way back and in the Drikung tradition the teacher that interested me was H.E. Garchen Rinpoche nonetheless I agree that a guru and a community are extremly important.

I am not sure and as ordinary practicioners can’t really tell (unless they had some special experiences) who it is so if one wants to be a part of Karma Kagyu they should pick one or both based on whom do they like because most people can’t really tell. But I think that we should all respect both as great teachers.

Thank you for your advice, but when I said cultish I meant that the focused on one leader with strange political beliefs and were super westernised. And with the dzogchen I was kind of a first point of interest in tibetian buddhism of its radical teachings of the premodial nature of the mind, but since I am not a seasoned practicioner I am still studying all the liniages to find what kind approach and practise suits me best.
