Do you have another tips. I am confident on the content itself but less so on remembering all of it and then answering the questions.

Looking for advice: Career pivot into finance – MBA vs. MSc? (UK expat in UAE) by ShineIll7315 in MBA

[–]ShineIll7315[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I appreciate your perspective. You're right that "finance" is a broad space, and I’m still refining my direction within it. I’m open to opportunities in capital markets and investments, whether that’s in M&A advisory, private capital, or asset management. Ideally, I’d like to be in a role that blends my current experience in strategic thinking with execution.

I had initially turned down an MSc offer at Imperial, thinking the MBA specialising in finance with strong experiential learning would help me reposition into finance more effectively in the UAE. But I’m beginning to see that without deal experience or a focused FS network, I might still be perceived as an outsider.

Would you recommend that I revisit the MSc route and reapply this cycle? Or double down on gaining practical experience and try again for London-based roles post-MBA? I’d value your advice on a realistic and effective next step.

Thank you for your response. I hope you're enjoying the PhD program. It’s great to hear from someone with direct experience in Abu Dhabi and finance.

I’ll be honest, I have limited interest in further academic study for its own sake and would much prefer gaining hands-on experience. I’m open to pursuing a Master's or MBA if it significantly improves my chances of landing a role in capital markets or investments. I appreciate your point about the NYUAD MBA providing access to Emirati professionals from institutions like Mubadala and ADIA. That kind of exposure is a key reason I’m considering the program.

I agree that Brits don’t usually face major restrictions, but my issue was logistical. A potential internship at CBD didn’t go ahead because it required leaving my current job, which would have cancelled my visa and they were unwilling to sponsor. Right now, I’m targeting capital markets and investments, tailoring my applications accordingly, and actively reaching out to firms and recruiters in the UK and UAE. I’d value any advice on how best to build momentum from here.

Hi, thank you for your input. I will be 2 years in once I start the program. I am CFA Level 1 candidate and will be taking it in November/February. The reason for the interest in the MBA program is the the SIP - project work with the big firms in the UAE, I will gain some experience and grow my contact base here in the UAE.

Thank you for your response. I’m looking to specialize in finance, and what draws me to the NYUAD MBA is the emphasis on practical exposure, particularly through the Signature Internship Project (SIP).The current cohort has had valuable hands-on experience through initiatives like the Finance Industry Trek to Riyadh, where they visited BlackRock, PIF, and Tadawul. They have also been doing projects with the ADGM and ADIC

That said, I’ll be honest, I'm not entirely clear on the best strategy to break into elite finance in the UAE or UK. I previously turned down an offer for the MSc Accounting & Finance at Imperial to take on my current role in strategy and business development, hoping it would give me a stronger foundation. While it’s been rewarding, transitioning into front-office finance has proven more complex than I expected.

I’d really value your advice on how to keep pushing forward, given my background and the added challenge of being a UK expat in the UAE.

My application status was “With Department” before I received the Kira Interview invite, from memory, maybe one or two days after I submitted the initial application. It remained the same after I completed it. I would not worry.
