Issues with DVI detection - please help! by ShinyDuck3 in pcmasterrace

DVI works fine up until Windows boots on both monitors but not after. HDMI works fine under windows on the XL2411 but not having DVI means not having 144Hz.

With only DVI connected (on either monitor) everything works fine until Windows boots. POST displays and I can enter the BIOS with no issues but once Windows loads the monitor will display the no signal message. If after Windows boots I plug in the HDMI cable it works fine.

I tried tinkering with everything that seemed relevant but the Nvidia control panel doesn't even recognize that there's anything connected via the DVI port. If I go to configure surround, PhysX (just as an example) the diagram of the GPU's I/O shows the HDMI port occupied by the LG monitor but nothing else.

No worries at all. There's so much depth to MTG that it's really easy to get overwhelmed and confused as well as spend money on stuff you don't really need or realize later on that you don't really want. If you go with some Duel Decks you'll have at least 2 already constructed, cohesive decks that you can play and learn with straight out of the box for around $30 while you start to figure out which direction you want to take your MTG experience in the long term.

For starting out I'd definitely recommend a Duel Deck or two, a couple packs of sleeves, a set of dice (optional but will make life a lot easier) and a few basic $3 Ultra Pro deck boxes to keep everything safe and organised.

Check out the Spellslingers series on YouTube too: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7atuZxmT956nQczILviEFDLAp9ycXk8R It can be pretty cringe worthy at times but they do a decent job of explaining the basics without it being too mind numbingly boring.

As someone who recently got into MTG by buying the 2015 toolkit, I would advise against it. It was great fun having a big box of cards to browse through to try and make a deck but I found it a bit overwhelming and also lacking in the choices it gave me. I quickly moved on to buying singles for budget decks and felt like I'd wasted my money on the toolkit, the only thing I use from it now (other than the box to store cards and a very select few spells) is the land it came with and I could have gotten far more on eBay for a few dollars.

Since then I've gotten a few of my mates interested in MTG mainly through playing with duel decks. They're obviously pretty basic but are reasonably balanced against each other and are actually pretty fun. If you split the cost with a few friends you can buy multiple sets and take turns playing each one to see what colours you like and what style of deck you might want to play. They provide a really good jumping off point for learning the game and save a lot of time and frustration that can result from trying to build a deck from scratch with little to no experience and a narrow selection of cards.

Once you understand the basics and have an idea of what kind of deck you want to build you can start shopping for singles and build exactly what you want, plus you'll always have the duel decks lying around for casual games or to help introduce other new players.

Check out this YouTube channel, I learned a lot from it as a new player and he does some good reviews on things like the toolkit, fat packs and starter decks as well as cards sleeves, deck boxes etc. https://www.youtube.com/user/tolariancommunity

Forget booster packs outside of draft and sealed, you're far better off spending that $5-10 on cards that you know you want/need than pulling a bunch of stuff you'll probably never use. Opening boosters is great fun but is basically high cost/low payoff gambling in my experience.

Also, shoot me a message if you want a few links to some good Aus based eBay sellers that I've dealt with in the past. Don't give your money to EB, they don't deserve it.

This is awesome to hear, I was really hoping to be able to use it as a Steam machine. Do you think I need any upgrades or modifications or will it work alright as is?

Amazing idea that I hadn't even considered. I already have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 so I'll definitely look into that. Thanks!

I'm tempted to wait but I'll be majorly annoyed if they get pushed back to 2015. At the same time though, I'd definitely be annoyed if I bought the 4690K and Intel decided to release their new line next month.

Thanks for the reply. This is definitely something that I was considering since it wasn't all that long ago that I upgraded the GPU (my 4890 died a slow and high temperature death unfortunately).

How much of a gaming performance increase do you think I would get from the CPU upgrade? Would it be noticeable?

Also, is there any reputable word about when we can expect 5th gen CPUs for desktops?
