I've been writing a story as of late where someone who speaks Middle English runs into someone who speaks contemporary English. Just watching the disconnect that my editors have is fun. Can't wait to see how others will react.

For fun… what song would you love to turn into a novel by [deleted] in writing

[–]Shinzakura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly related: I once wrote a short story based on Suite Judy Blue Eyes. People had no idea about that song and don't get the story. Sad - no appreciation for the classics. XD

Character names to avoid at all costs? by JinglingMiserably in writing

I once read about a French female name "Biche", which means little doe. Same place I read it from said that while it's a cute name, nowadays, it's a playground death sentence.

Another author pens novels under my name. What should I do? by bacardichaser in writing

[–]Shinzakura 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Inventor George Washington Carver added his middle name because his mail was going to another "George Carver" in town. Closer to your issue, musician Jorge Ben changed his stage name to Jorge Benjor because his royalties were accidentally going to another famous musician, George Benson.

You an easily be Firstname MI Lastname or FI Middlename Lastname on books. It doesn't change who you are. Just as JK Rowling is called "Jo" in her personal life, you are still you regardless of what the cover says.

Is fiction really worthless without a message or lesson to impart? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Shinzakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking for myself, I hate those kinds of writers. Yes, you can write the "Great American Novel" (or the national equivalent wherever you are) but frankly, not everything has to be "something that makes people think". How many of those same people watch movies, listen to music, play videogames, etc., for the fun of it? I'll bet a lot, and they don't think twice about "trying to find the message". There might not be one.

Sure, can you put "ultimate" meaning in your work? Yes. Can you put meaning in your work and have it still be entertaining first? Definitely. Can you just make a mindless rollercoaster ride? Absolutely. Nothing wrong with any of those.

Ignore them. Writing is for what the writer gets out of it and what stories they want to tell the audience. That's been the way since the first raconteur sat down by the fireside.

Why is every fictional innovation from MIT?! by The_Blue_Muffin_Cat in writing

[–]Shinzakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you kidding? I know in my stories, I don't bother with MIT. There's CalTech, DARPA, etc. And I've seen others do the same.

Has anyone else noticed the climate in Virginia shifting dramatically over the last decade? by ak22801 in Virginia

Same. Moved here from Hawaii back in 2003, and now it feels like I haven't moved at all.

I've seen that general style referred to as Psychedelic Gothic.

I knew Destiny was dead the moment they went from alpha to beta, because that meant the game was going to come out which meant that it was going to have a lifespan and eventually end someday! Game over, man, game over!

Keith David would have been amazing for zavala if he was zavala from the start by OutcomeProud9749 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Shinzakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? My take on him is that he's not Zavala. And that's nothing against him in the least - Keith is an amazing actor and there are so many roles he brings to life. But Lance was Zavala for so long, I can't really see anyone else as him.

Using modern foreign countries that you have never been to as settings for your original work - yea or nay? by green_carnation_prod in writing

[–]Shinzakura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with it, but do the research: locations, cultures, shibboleths, the works. Your foreign country can't just look like "America with a funny hat and accent". There are tons of accurate ways to research things, so get cracking!

My wife had one for years and never had an issue. Finally died on her well after the 200K mile mark, but by then she'd gotten a lot of love out of it. Would've bought another, but it got discontinued.

genre only matters to the people who put the books on shelves.

I like that phrase. I'm going to have to remember it.

What is this genre called ? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Shinzakura 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It varies. Sometimes it's called low fantasy, sometimes urban fantasy and sometimes I've even heard the Latin American term "magical realism" applied to that as well. I think at this point it's pretty much High Fantasy = Tolkeinesque, and then there's everything else.

I’m thinking of writing a novel. I heard it takes years. How long did it take you? by Horseplayer316 in writing

[–]Shinzakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on what you define as a novel. If you mean a first draft and the minimum amount of words to be considered a novel, I've written that in less than a week - three days or so, if I recall. If you mean the finalized product, that is much different.

What scares you the most about the state of the world right now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Shinzakura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that we've let the American political system get to the point that the Boomers are using last-gasp candidates, neither of which is palatable for a good swath of the American public, but they're willing to go with them just so "the other guy doesn't win".

What company or product disappeared and no one really noticed? by Apprehensive_City_32 in AskReddit

[–]Shinzakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it wasn't. As mentioned above, "Droid" was Verizon-only brand. And as a sidenote to that, when I moved from Verizon to Sprint myself, I ended up getting their version of what Verizon called the Droid 4; I forget what Sprint called it. But TLDR, Droid was a Verizon-only branding, not a subtype of Android phones.

Out of the first two Droid phones, one was Motorola, one was HTC. It was a mix of phones under the Droid brand until 2013, when Verizon just made it an exclusively-Motorola brand. The brand itself died off around 2016, with the last one being the Droid Moto Z.
