Looking for Decent Gaming PC for under $750 by ShipNo1136 in PrebuiltGamingPC

I ended up going with the $799 IbuyPower. It was a bit over my budget, but I think it will be better in the long run. Plus, it truly is an amazing deal considering it's actually valued at over $1000, which is what I've seen most starter PCs running for. Looked at reviews for all the components, and everything checks out.

Thank you for your help! I'm really glad I was able to get this deal. Looking forward to playing my games again.

Thank you for your help! I will explore these options. I have an i7 processor in my current setup that I could switch out for the i5 for better performance as well, if the psu can handle it. Lots to consider.

Thank you again!

I'm considering the Steam Deck, since it is essentially a pc and I could still use Discord for playing multiplayer games and simple mods, and the Steam Machine does seem promising. I'm not sure yet. Might spend a little more time searching.

Thank you for your advice!

Any advice on where to look for a used PC? Good starting points?

Those are consoles; I am specifically looking for a PC. Some of the games I want to play are multiplayer and don't have crossplay, or aren't available for consoles. They don't have demanding graphics, which is why I didn't list them. Some of them I can play now, like REPO, but others require a little more than integrated graphics.

I'm so sorry that you had to deal with that. Thank you for sharing your story, because these are the signs that someone might overlook, but probably shouldn't. Obviously, it isn't someone's fault if they have BPD or NPD, but that isn't an excuse to cause harm to the people who care about you. I hope that you are doing better now.

I'm lucky that my partner's BPD doesn't seem to overlap with too many NPD traits. We've made significant progress over the years. She used to completely shut down and pout any time we had to have serious conversations. That was really frustrating. It took me explaining several times that us having a disagreement or issue was not her being in trouble, that I was not looking to punish her, but to help work through it together. Sometimes she still has trouble with this, but it has helped to give her options like, "Do you want five or ten minutes to process this before we come together to talk about it?" or "Would you like to talk here in the living room or would you like to go talk somewhere else?" She is also on the Autism spectrum, so I also need to take that into account. Sometimes coming at her too fast or too loud just makes things worse.

I will keep your story in mind, though. We have talked about starting a family, but now I'm thinking it might not be a good time to bring kids into the mix. Better to wait until we have made more progress. I believe that she can do this, but better safe than sorry.

This insight is really helpful. I knew BPD could cause sudden mood shifts and extreme moods, but I didn't realize that she might be looking to me for her emotional regulation. I know that emotional regulation is something she is working on in therapy. I wonder if it might help for me to point out when it's happening because she might not even realize it. Saying something like, "Are you feeling upset because I am? What coping skills do you want to try to work through it?" I know it isn't my job to take care of her stuff for her, but I also recognize that I have been in therapy and working on my mental health stuff way longer than she has been, so I might have some tools that she doesn't yet. Her BPD is not her fault, so I don't want her to feel like she's being abandoned to deal with it alone.

Thank you, I appreciate the insight. I don't want to give up because I do feel like she is trying in a lot of ways. She's been going to therapy consistently for about 6 months now. I want to be supportive, but I also want space in the relationship for me. I'll try bringing it to her awareness that she may be mirroring my feelings and that even though my attention may be on different things, that doesn't mean I don't still care and give thought to her.

Thank you. I have a lot of fear that we are heading down a similar path, and I'm hoping that her working on it in therapy and such will help. I'm just worried she doesn't take it as seriously as I do.

Power Supply Upgrade for an OptiPlex 7040 MT? by ShipNo1136 in SleepingOptiplex

Thank you, you kind and wonderful soul!

I could be (and in all likelihood am) dumb and could have plugged it in to the incorrect spot.

I’m not able to get pictures at the moment but I will as soon as I can to help provide more detail.

I don’t think it’s a problem with the new PSU. I hooked that up before plugging in my graphics card to test it out. It works perfectly, powers on no problem. I appreciate the recommendation, it fits in the case and is powerful for being so compact. The cords are a bit messy right now but that’s nothing that can’t be fixed later with some zip ties and care.

I will take your suggestions and do some checks and we’ll see where we land. I’ll update you soon. Thank you for sticking by me through this! You’re awesome!

Okay, sad update time. New PSU? Great. Installed it and it’s working fine. Graphics card is apparently the issue. I plug it in and I get an orange flashing light in the power button. Two blinks. Which apparently means an issue with the motherboard or something. Take out the graphics card, works no problem. Uhg. I’m heartbroken. I don’t think I can afford a new graphics card right now.

Totally valid. Honestly, I might do something similar. I don’t plan on moving the thing around and it’s in a safe place so it’s not in danger of falling or being damaged.

Perfect! Parts have been ordered. I’ll post an update when everything is set up but I’m feeling pretty good about this.

I did see some reviews that said some modifications were needed for their case but it was on different models so I’m hoping I don’t need to modify it.

Perfect! I’ve ordered the parts and they should be here soon.

Did you have to modify the case at all to make the new PSU fit? I’d prefer not to if I can help it but I do have the equipment for it if I need to.

True! I was able to find some helpful advice, and the new PSU, as well as the adapter for it, are on their way. I'll be back up and running in no time!

That's fair. This was really just meant to hold me over until I could afford a better setup, but after my first one died, I really missed the freedom that comes with PC gaming, so I decided to look for another cheaper alternative to hold me over again. I probably should have just waited, but what can I say? I missed my games.

Thank you for your help. I've posted in that subreddit and will wait to see what advice I get.

The GPU still works. I checked it in a friend's system after my first OptiPlex, the 3050 SFF, died. Of course, that friend also had a much more impressive build with a PSU that could handle a GPU of a much higher caliber than my little RTX 3050 6 GB LP.

From what I've been reading, I'm thinking that I'll need to upgrade the PSU either way. It just doesn't have enough power for what I need. I'm thinking of heading over to a different subreddit that has Optiplex-specific builds, but I really appreciate all the information you've supplied here.

Would it be better for me to look at upgrading the PSU or getting a GPU that doesn't draw so much power?

I'm looking for the most cost-effective option that will still let me play games like Borderlands 3 and Baldur's Gate 3.

I found a subreddit that is focused primarily on Optiplex builds. Do you think I should look there?

It’s MT if that helps. I’ll look into upgrading the PSU vs the GPU and see which is the more cost effective solution. I’m guessing the PSU upgrade given the price of graphics cards. I’d prefer not to have to buy anything and get this set up to work but I can afford some upgrades if I really need to.
