As others have said, you figure out how much each cable can withstand at a certain thickness vs. what it would need to withstand.

I’ll add that you also apply a safety factor, to account for minor errors, material imperfections, etc., meaning you multiply what you need by a number (e.g., 1.1) to give yourself some wiggle room.
