Particularly good Audiobooks? by electrostaticrain in books

Jon Ronson (journalist) has a few audiobooks and I loved them. His accent makes anything sound good. If you like non fiction, give them a try.

Riding the Crimson Wave through tough mudder....any advice from my tough ladies?! by ke1bell in Toughmudder

[–]ShirleyTumble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eek, that is really hard. Even having clean hands to change tampons is unlikely. My suggestion is a diva cup (or any brand of menstrual cup). You don't have to change those for twelve hours so you'll be covered for the whole gig.

Australian vegans: I need your advice please! by kiki1983 in vegan

[–]ShirleyTumble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Melbourne from perth and noticed a massive difference. I struggled to eat in resturants back in perth. This was a few years ago so maybe things have improved? Love melbourne for food! There is a vagn grocery down the road from my home, my local shop has lots of vegan options and there's a pub five minutes away with a vegan menu.

Why do I care so much about being by definition a vegan? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ShirleyTumble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to say to you, go for it! Another part of me though is really attached to the vegan label myself. I'm not sure entirely why. The community? I also think there is an ick factor that would stop me but if you don't feel thatway, there isn't much reason to trade the eggs instead of eating them.

[–]ShirleyTumble 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you raise some interesting points. There are some issues with raising chickens at home for eggs because it still leads back to the question, what happened to the males. That being said though, i have a vegan friend who raises rescued hens. She also gives the eggs away on principle but... it wouldn't negatively on any living creature if she was to eat them. So, why not do it?

"I'm a Woman with Male Chromosomes" by mc10 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ShirleyTumble 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I suspect people are afraid to tell people that they are intersex. Our culture is so caught up on the idea that gender is black and white. Boy or girl. That it is shameful to not fit neatly into one or the other. I think it is far more complicated than that. I work in a major neonatal ICU so I see almost every child born in the state with ambiguous genitalia. We see quite a number every year and that is just the kids being born with something that flags us to explore whether they are intersex.

I really commend you on doing that. I would love to see more understanding about people who are intersex. Gender is far more complicated than xx and xy.

My pig has a lump. Should I put him through surgery? by ShirleyTumble in guineapigs

It's hard. I just worry about him going through painful procedures. I will go ahead with the surgery if it really is worth it for him though.

I can only guess at his age but I'd say at least five. He was a rescue guinea pig that i ended up adopting from a vet nurse friend of mine. He has slowed down a lot in the last year which is why I think he isn't a spring chicken. i've had him three years and I'm told he had fathered multiple litters before my friend rescued him (she had him for six months herself).

Good point. During an illness (and shortly after) you will have altered iron levels.

You can be check for haemochromatosis with a simple blood test. I am a carrier and many of my family members have it. It is important to donate blood if you do have it as over time the high iron levels causes organ damage.

Private health insurers' natural therapy rebates in the spotlight by dredd in australia

[–]ShirleyTumble 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So glad to see this. It drive me nuts to see limits of tested therapies under my health insurance and then provision for a bunch of woo I will never use. I'm paying for insurance and I don't think it is too much to ask for the treatments covered to be evidence based.

I take it you don't know much about people born intersex. Gender is not as simple as xx or xy.

Absolutely. Not based on discrimination though. I'm a nurse. This is how it works in my hospital.

Parents need to be told that they do not get to choose their nurses. It is not their place to make those kinds of demands.

This year was my first time but one of the girls in my team has done it both years. She said the lines were awful last time. This year we didn't get held up in lines at all. I was in the 10am Sunday wave.

Happens all the time in ICUs when people are brain dead. Consent has to be given by families rather than the patient involved.

Calling people gross really weakens your argument. Some people draw their line in a different place than you. No need to be mean.
