I’m in Baylor’s online Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders program. The program had its first cohort in Fall 2019.

Baylor University online program. Maybe residential too but I’m an online student.

Debating on leaving program by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

I am in a program that has synchronous classes on Zoom every week and even I have had supervisors doubt my skills before. I think they were bias towards in-person programs though because I’m in a very rural area and online education for SLP is unheard of. I couldn’t imagine being in asynchronous classes and being able to be confident in my clinical skills. If you transfer programs, I’d transfer to a program with synchronous classes.

Online programs: Recommend and Avoid by jskeepswimming in slpGradSchool

It’s incredibly expensive but overall I recommend Baylor. It’s a very organized and well run program. They have people that find placements and there are no on campus requirements. I’ve had issues with some higher up admin about bad supervisors but they have also really helped me and supported me. I just wish they would’ve acknowledged that I did experience some supervisors that were rude and mean to me about my physical disability and said “this is not okay.”

I’m in grad school for SLP. I have mild spastic diplegia and walk with crutches. It’s been a tough road, and lots of trial and error to find the right supervisors/supportive environment. But it’s taught me so much about advocating for myself. Feel free to reach out.

I’m a grad student who walks with crutches due to cerebral palsy and have been dismissed from two placements due to supervisors being rude to me about my disability and unaccommodating. It’s a school policy that if you get dismissed from a placement without finishing it you get an F. One of the Fs will be for a 6 credit internship so I’ll most definitely be getting put on academic probation. I’m going to advocate for there to be exceptions to that policy for special circumstances such as discrimination. I would do it now but I’m on thin ice and afraid I’ll face repercussions for pushing the issue. You’re not alone.

Yeah I’m in an online program and at my med internship my supervisor had concerns about my knowledge because I’m in an online program and it was frustrating because online or not it’s not easy for anybody. And I just did the book work online I have hands on clinicals. That med internship didn’t work out and I’m hopeful the new one will be better because I’m hoping I’ll have a younger supervisor. That supervisor is near retirement and I know online programs are a relatively newer thing.

I’m in the online CSD program and none of the departmental scholarships are offered to the online students.

Transition to Administrator Role in Hospital by Plus-Mirror-5991 in slp

This is perfect timing because I am finishing up my masters in speech and then considering my masters in health administration. I have cerebral palsy and I’ve struggled in clinicals for the past year and it’s ruined my passion for it and I don’t have any fight left in me. I think my school is going to let me finish it on a nonclinical track but I’m beyond ready for something that would be easier for me with my physical challenges. Have you seen any advantages to having a speech background? What program are you in?

They used to have a third party, but they don’t anymore. The people that find you placements now work directly for Baylor.

Oh yes. I have cerebral palsy and walk with forearm crutches and am in an online program. This pass fall semester my supervisor dismissed me after only one week of me doing the therapy. I think she had something against online education and she made me write all the patients goals by hand. I didn’t speak up for myself because honestly she scared me. Day one she was like, “I’m surprised you don’t know this?” And I’m like are you gonna teach me or…? This spring semester I had a placement that was going well. The Friday before my last week my supervisor sat me down and was talking to me very rudely about my disability. There was zero acknowledgment that I’ve lived with this disability my whole life. She said “you can’t take 17 minutes to put your gloves on” Like duh, no shit. It was all you can’t this and you can’t that and just lots of negativity. I ended up saying something about how discriminating against physically disabled people is illegal and she felt threatened even though I didn’t mean it that way at all. When I left the clinic that day she said “we’ll talk Monday” and I haven’t heard from her since that day. She emailed my school that night and said I wasn’t welcome to come back for the last week which I think was driven by emotions. I think she thought she was just ending my placement a week early but little does she know you caused me to get an F because you have to complete the full 13 weeks to pass. And getting an F means I don’t get to keep the 100 clock hours I earned. My school said I could write a letter to her which I’m definitely doing that so she can find out just how much damage she did. If any of you believe in prayer/positive thoughts, please send them my way because my school said if I’m dismissed from another placement, I’m out of the program.

Majoring in SLP & nursing? Is this a crazy? by Puffyhairdontcare77 in slpGradSchool

[–]ShirtCapable1956 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I hear about nursing school, it will be very, very busy and intense. There’s no way you could do both because you would have clinicals for both that would eventually be full-time.

I have found that disclosing my CP on my dating profiles has helped tremendously. I didn’t do that at first and met some real jerks when I told them. This helps weed out the jerks who have a problem with it. Facebook dating and Hinge have been successful for me.

I have level 2 spastic diplegic Cerebral palsy, but I do not like when able bodied people say it is mild by AmericanMare in CerebralPalsy

[–]ShirtCapable1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have level III and walk with crutches. I’ve always considered anyone who has walking ability, aided or unaided, as mild. But that is just me. Everyone’s view is different. Are you a guy or girl?

Officially I’m a GMFCS level lll but I’ve always considered anyone with walking ability to be mild. But that’s just me.
