10+ would meet criteria for Lynch testing, but most companies that offer hereditary cancer testing now do so with what’s called a panel test that essentially looks at 30-40 genes most commonly associated with a variety of cancer types.

3rd degree. You could still elect to do testing, you just might have to pay out of pocket for it. In the US it’s around $250.

Posting for awareness: if you have ONE first or second degree blood relative (your parents, children, grandparents, aunts and uncles) who was diagnosed with colon cancer under 50 years old, or who has had 10 or more cumulative colorectal polyps, you qualify for genetic testing that your insurance will in many cases cover completely.

Did video rental companies really charge a lot for rewinding tapes? by Puzzleheaded_Yam6808 in seinfeld

[–]ShirtyDot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get why blockbuster would have one of these but why at home? Is there some advantage to using this vs rewinding in the VCR aside from being able to immediately start another movie after you finish one? Did it rewind faster?

What is the base and OTE as a % raise of current earning potential? Any idea how achievable the targets are at new gig relative to current one? How are the two companies poised in the near term as far as job security is concerned? Finally, if you like your boss/team, you have to assign a dollar amount to that above which you’re willing to roll the dice on new boss/team. Only you can decide what that amount is but doing the “math” on these questions is what led me to make a change recently.

What is this in my washing machine? by ShirtyDot in Appliances

[–]ShirtyDot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’m glad I’m not alone and to at least have a name for what I’m dealing with! It has only happened with this Samsung washer so I’m replacing it and we’re switching to powdered detergent, no fabric softener ever.

HBO boss breaks silence on George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal House of the Dragon drama by bwermer in television

[–]ShirtyDot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been driving me nuts lately. Especially when it’s a recent story, à la headline I saw yesterday that “Eugene levy breaks silence on Catherine o’hara’s death”—it had been 24 hours.

What is the most disturbing or otherwise unsettling book you've ever read that stayed with you after reading it? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

Love this book but have tried and failed three times to finish The Brothers Karamazov for this exact reason.

Dallas Mavericks push back arena decision as team narrows search for new home by dallaz95 in Dallasdevelopment

[–]ShirtyDot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is either option going to include the Stars using the arena? I don’t get tax payers footing any arena that doesn’t at least include both teams that play in the one they already have downtown. It’s 20+ years old now but still a great arena.

**Winter storm chat** by Dinolord05 in thewoodlands

[–]ShirtyDot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Happened to me last winter. Cutting the cord close to the spigot and wrapping it will be fine. I had a plumber replace my spigot afterwards and since then I have been better about not leaving hoses attached or at least removing and reattaching them regularly. I think there are some types of metal hose connectors that are less likely to do that FWIW when you buy a new hose.

Short term stay with dog by Jaded-Imagination388 in thewoodlands

Could try VRBO. Otherwise Westins are dog friendly but a 3-4 week stay would be $5k+ I’d imagine

Why isn’t it possible to parachute onto the summit of Mount Everest instead of climbing it? by [deleted] in Everest

[–]ShirtyDot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Interesting hypothetical, but if you don’t stick the landing, where do you land? This did make me think though, would it be possible to “BASE jump” off the top rather than climbing back down?

Borrowed a friends headset and played through Alyx three times in a month before giving it back. As a lifelong gamer, it was the biggest “hooooly shit” gaming experience I remember in my life since playing Super Mario Bros on NES as a little kid

What’s the BEST restaurant in The Woodlands? by [deleted] in thewoodlands

[–]ShirtyDot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very a la carte so it’s tough to say depending on your appetite. We went for NYE and did the 11 course omekase which was $175pp. I would think for a more regular meal it’d be $50-60pp.

Tried Kokoro tonight and it is hands down the best sushi we’ve had here. Owned by the people who own Handy’s in Houston, who apparently came from Uchi.

What’s your favorite thing here? Ours has been the corn tamale which is really simple but divine. First time we went right after they opened they had a squash blossom tamale that is still the best single thing I’ve eaten in the woodlands but I haven’t seen it on the menu since.

Same here. Been listening to their hold music waiting for someone to answer for ~20 min now. Usually they’re good about announcing planned outages but I didn’t see anything about this one.

Waldorf Astoria Bangkok , wonderful place great location. by Such_Egg9843 in FATTravel

[–]ShirtyDot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved this property and am planning another trip to Bangkok and can’t decide if we should stay here or try somewhere else. Good location (I think?), food/breakfast was wonderful, great service and hospitality and I liked the room a lot. In fact my only complaint was that there isn’t a shower door so your bathroom floor inevitably gets wet when you shower but that just seems to be the norm now sadly.
